Trout Fishing Temperature Information

Know before you go!

Trout

Fishing during hot summer months when water temperatures can exceed 68°F can be harmful to trout.

To help protect the trout resources, please review the following information
and check water temperatures before you go fishing.

Temperatures above 68° F

  • Trout feed less, fishing is generally poor, trout highly vulnerable to handling stress
  • Anglers are encouraged to target other species

Temperatures between 65° F - 67° F

  • To reduce stress on trout, fishing during morning hours is recommended
  • Keep trout in water
  • Avoid picture taking
  • Gently revive trout before releasing

Temperatures below 65° F

  • Preferred temperatures, fishing is generally good
  • Minimal stress during landing and handling; best chance for survival after release
  • Most likely to be active and feeding

Catch and Release Tips for Trout Survival

  • Land fish as quickly as possible
  • Use a rubberized landing net (if possible)
  • Keep fish in the water while removing hooks (barbless hooks are encouraged)
