First Day Hikes include First Weekend Outdoor Opportunities, with Ranger-led Hikes and Self-Guided Hike Options for the Whole Family!
Maryland State Parks will be offering First Weekend hike opportunities across the state from December 31, 2024 - January 2, 2025. First Day Hikes are part of a nationwide initiative led by America’s State Parks that encourages all 50 states to offer outdoor hiking opportunities on the first day of the new year! Join us in Maryland on January 1st or throughout the first weekend of the new year for a hike at a state park near you.
For 2025, there will be two types of hikes available:

Ranger-led hikes: These hikes will be led by a Park Ranger, have specific start times and many require pre-registration. Please read the details provided below carefully.

Self-guided hikes: These hikes will be available throughout the weekend, on well marked trails. Park staff and volunteers may be available to get you started but will not be joining you on the hike itself. Please read the details provided below carefully.

First Day Hike on the Mountain -

Description:
Start your new year with an outdoor mountain adventure! Ranger Mac will take you along the moderately challenging Lonancona Loop trail. Hikers will experience dense forest, rocky uneven terrain, and nearly 700 ft of elevation gain throughout the journey. Pets on a leash are welcome.
Additional Details:
This hike is not ADA or stroller accessible. There are no entrance fees required to participate in the hike. Portable restrooms are available near the trailhead. This hike is located at elevations over 2,000 ft where snow and ice may accumulate.

Western Maryland Rail Trail -

Description:
Indigo Tunnel Hike. Park at the Little Orleans rail trail parking lot and hike east on the paved bike trail to an old train tunnel. It was built between 1903- 1906 as part of the Western MD railway. Upon reaching the tunnel turn around there and return to the Orleans parking lot. There are interpretive panels along the way to explain the railway history.
Additional Details:
No porta pot available in winter. Tunnel is closed off due to bat hibernation/habitat. There is little to no reception in some areas. Leashed pets are welcome on the trail.

Join Ranger Emily to kick off your year with a run in the great outdoors! All experience levels welcome. Stop by the Nature Center are for warm beverages, s'mores, and this year's First Day Hike Sticker! This run is a great way to get involved with Healthy Parks, Healthy People initiatives!

Join park rangers as we take a slower stroll style hike and enjoy the nature around us! This guided hike will touch on the ecosystems and the nature we can appreciate in the winter. We will stick to paved and flat surfaces, featuring only one or two very gradual inclines. This hike is great for all ages. Stop by the Nature Center area for warm beverages, s'mores, and this year's First Day Hike sticker!

This hike will take place on paved surfaces throughout the campground. While surfaces will be paved, please be aware we often encounter snowy or icy conditions in January. Leashed pets that are comfortable around large groups of people and other pets are welcome. Restrooms are available at the Nature Center.

Potomac River Scenic Overlook Trail -

Description:
This 2.7-mile gravel return trail begins with a steep 9 % grade incline and follows the rolling ridgeline of the hill through early succession forest and past the Potomac River Scenic Overlook to the former National Guard Climbing Tower after 1.35 miles. Visitors can then return to the parking lot via the same trail or continue 1 mile to the park’s West Maryland Rail Trail entrance.

Admittance to the park is free. A portable restroom is available at the parking lot. The trail is not handicap or stroller accessible. Pets are welcome. Little to no cell signal in some areas.

On New Year's Day (only), join park staff before or after your self guided hike from 1:00pm-3:00pm at the Concessions building for an Open House. A fire will be burning inside to warm up next to and hot drinks available (suggested donations to the Friends of CFSP & GSP). Outside of those hours, use the sign in the binder at the trailhead to tell us where you're from, how many are in your party and get a sticker.

Stroller accessible, no pets permitted inside building but there is seating right outside. Park entrance fee applies of $3/MD vehicle or $5/out of state vehicle, cash and check only paid at the honor box at park entrance.

Lower Falls to Cliff Trail -

Description:
Hike to Cunningham Falls to start the new year with some exercise! From 12/30/23-1/1/24, use posted signage at the Falls Trailhead to self guide yourself on the Lower Falls Trail to see the falls and then back on the Cliff Trail. The option is there to return on the same trail you hiked there on to make it 1 mile instead. The Lower Falls trail is gravel with one larger downhill. The Cliff trail is more strenuous and includes navigating around large boulders and walking on rocks that could be slippery. Use the sign in the binder at the trailhead to tell us where you're from, how many are in your party and get a sticker.
Additional Details:
Lower Falls trail is accessible with a stroller that has larger wheels. The Cliff Trail is not suitable for strollers. Leashed pets welcome. Park entrance fees are cash/check only $3/MD vehicle, $5/out of state vehicle at honor box at the park's contact booth

We'll begin at the Old South Mountain Inn and hike on the Appalachian Trail, which follows a historic road trace used during the battle, to Fox's Gap. Once we reach Fox's Gap we will hike to the area where the battle began and discuss what occurred here 162 years ago.

Join us on this hearty hike up Meadown Mountain. This six mile hike will start at the Discovery Center and hike up to the firetower on the top of the mountain and head back down. Plan for at least three hours, as we will be climbing the mountainside. We will have the Discovery Center open to check out before the hike and enjoy some hot chocolate after.

Take a hike around historic Fort Frederick and learn some history about the Civilian Conservation Corps and what they did at Fort Frederick. This trail is easy to moderate it is on paved trails, grass and uneven surfaces. Start at the Visitor Center for hot drinks and trail guides.
Additional Details:
This hike is not stroller or wheelchair accessible. The natural surface, and paved trails can create slipping or tripping hazards, especially in winter weather. Hiking boots are recommended. Pets on a leash are welcome. Bathrooms are avaible at the Visitor Center.

Description:
This 4-mile rolling and sometimes rocky trail is a figure-eight loop; hikers can choose to explore the North or South loops or the connector trail. The starting point for this hike is at the Wildlife and Heritage parking lot off of Woodmont Road. Enjoy this moderate hike through a section of Woodmont Natural Resources Management Area, and keep an eye out for deer, turkeys, and other local wildlife!

Little to no reception in the area, leashed pets are welcome, stroller/wheelchair inaccessible, no entry fees, parking at the trailhead and on Woodmont Rd, no restroom facilities. Hunting is permitted on the trail; high visibility clothing is recommended.

The NCR-Hereford Volunteer Association is excited to lead a guided bicycle ride from White Hall to the Pennsylvania border and back along the former route of the Northern Central Railroad. Enjoy scenic views of the Little Falls and Beetree Run as we bike through exposed geologic formations and experience history. The trail has a gentle grade and is well maintained. Participants will need to bring their own bicycling equipment, water, and snacks. We will not ride in rain or snow.

This is our "difficult" rated first day hike based on length, terrain, and elevation. Hikers will meet at the Bunker Hill parking lot by the blue trailhead. The start time for this hike is 11:00 AM, and due to the length there will only be one park-guided hike, but we will leave maps at the trailhead for those who come earlier/later to do the self-guided version.

First Day Hike at North Point State Park -

Description:
See the sunrise over the ancient Black Marsh and stand on the edge of the bay to take in the new day of the new year. This flat trail follows a trolley line bed through the woods, past an old power station, and looks East over the bay toward Pleasure Island and the Craig Hill Light. This hike offers no more than 21 feet of elevation change with excellent bird watching potential.

Leashed pets are welcome, please wear appropriate footwear as the trail can sometimes be wet. Be sure to bring water! Porta-pots are available at the meeting area. There is $3 In-State Fee and $5 Out-of-State Fee to enter the park.

Start your year off right with a flat 3.3 mile hike through the Black Marsh Wildlands and see historic remnants of Bay Shore Park. A Ranger will lead participants as they circumnavigate the park, ending at the Crystal Pier to watch the sunset and enjoy a small campfire with smores (weather permitting). Learn about some of the wildlife that can be seen in the park as well as the long history of North Point State Park. Smores generously provided by the North Point State Park Volunteers.

Description:
Join a Maryland Park Service Ranger on a 2-mile guided hike along a portion of Wildlife Drive through Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge.
Additional Details:
The Wildlife Drive is flat and paved, so it makes for an easier hike. Please respect Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge’s rules and regulations. Pets are not permitted in the refuge. Participants should wear weather-appropriate clothing and bring drinking water. Visitors can explore the Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad Visitor Center after the hike to learn about Harriet Tubman's life and legacy and / or become Junior Rangers.

White Tail Trail -
Self-Guided Hike
Description:
Join us for a self-led First Day Hike, along Janes Island State Park's White Tail Trail. This one-mile easy loop hike, will take you through a mature loblolly pine forest, to a mixed deciduous forest, and then out along the water of Daugherty Creek Canal. The trailhead for White-Tail Trail is located directly across from the Camper Check-In Parking Lot. You can pick up your First Day Hike sticker at the trailhead.

Parking at Janes Island is free. Leashed pets are welcome. Restrooms are available on site. White Tail Trail is stroller friendly. Make sure to bring plenty of water and to wear shoes/clothing appropriate for the weather (rain, snow or shine).

Start 2024 off by trying out a new hobby: Birding. Join Janes Island State Park Rangers and volunteers for an easy, two mile hike that will give teach you the basics of birding. This hike will take place at Irish Grove, an approximately 2,300 acre nature preserve on the Pocomoke Sound that is owned by the Maryland Ornithological Society. We will meet in the Camper Check-In Parking Lot at Janes Island and then caravan to Irish Grove. (Approximately a 10-minute drive away.)

Restrooms are available at Janes Island and outhouses are available at Irish Grove. Irish Grove is stroller friendly. Make sure to bring plenty of water and to wear shoes/clothing appropriate for the weather (rain, snow or shine). Bringing binoculars is recommended, but a limited number of binoculars will be available to borrow.

Bill Burton Fishing Pier State Park welcomes you to the park's First Day Hike on the Choptank River Trail, self-guided hike through wooded area, overlooking the Choptank River. Great area for bird watching. The trail is about a mile in length.

Join Assateague Coastkeeper and Assateague Coastal Trust staff at 10am for a guided family friendly beach walk, meet at the Assateague State Park Day Use Boardwalk. Learn about the history of Assateague Island and the Committee to Preserve Assateague, which later became ACT. Guides will point out treasures as you explore the beach, identify seashells, shorebirds, and more as you stroll along the Atlantic Ocean. Dress for the weather, it is often 10-15 degrees colder along the water! Stop by the Day-Use boardwalk for a a fireside chat with park staff, share stories, ask questions and make a connection. Hot chocolate will be provided by ACT. Hike will start at 10:00am. State Park Staff will be available 10am-12pm at the Day-Use Boardwalk.

Follow a Ranger lead hike down the Trail of Change. The Trail of Change is a legacy trail at the north end of the park. This 0.75 mile trail is best accessed from the marina parking lot and should be done in footwear you don't mind getting dirty or wet. The Trail of Change demonstrates changes in plant life and water levels, changes that occur over time and changes created by man. After the hike, join us for hot tea and cookies up at the camp store.
