Kick Off the New Year Outdoors with Maryland State Parks
First Day Hikes include Numerous Opportunities, with Ranger-led Hikes and Self-Guided Hike Options for Everyone!
Maryland State Parks will be offering First Day Hike opportunities across the state from December 31, 2025 - January 2, 2026. First Day Hikes are part of a nationwide initiative led by America’s State Parks that encourages all 50 states to offer outdoor hiking opportunities on the first day of the new year! Join us in Maryland on January 1st for a hike at a state park near you.
For 2026, there will be three types of hikes available:
-
Ranger-led hikes: These hikes will be led by a Park Ranger, have specific start times, and many require pre-registration. Please read the details provided below carefully.
-
Self-guided hikes: These hikes will be available throughout the weekend on well-marked trails. Park staff and volunteers may be available to get you started but will not be joining you on the hike itself. Please read the details provided below carefully.
-
AllTrails-Guided: Maryland DNR has partnered with the
AllTrails Public Lands Program to help Marylanders discover and navigate trails across our parks. Use AllTrails to navigate your hike and easily share your adventure on social!
Use the map below for the
AllTrails-highlighted hikes.
First Day Hike “I Hiked” Stickers will be available at select locations while supplies last!
Please note you are welcome to take a First Day Hike on any trail or at any State Park on January 1, if you would prefer!

Trail Map
- Address: 3452 Ferry Pl., Indian Head, MD
Description:
Begin your adventure at the entrance to Chapman State Park, where nature and history meet along the Potomac River. From the parking area, your guide will share stories that reflect the many generations of people who have called this landscape home, from the early fishing and ferry operations to those who lived, worked, and cared for the land over the centuries The hike continues around one of the historic barns on the property and through a mature forest of tulip poplars, Virginia pines, and southern red oaks. We will follow a gentle 100-foot descent toward the Chapman family cemetery and down to the Potomac shoreline. There, you will have time to look for shark teeth, driftwood, and photo opportunities along the river. From the shoreline, we will head south on the River Access Trail toward the manor house. The last stretch, about 200 feet, is a steep climb but rewards hikers with a visit inside the manor and beautiful elevated views of the Potomac River. The journey concludes along Ferry Place, a great spot to pause for photos and take in a view of the manor house in the distance.
