Newtowne Neck State Park is a 794-acre peninsula surrounded by Breton Bay, St. Clements Bay, and the Potomac River. It has seven miles of ecologically and recreationally important waterfront. The park's wealth of natural and cultural resources, its historic significance, and its geography and physical resources make it an ideal location for a variety of activities and outdoor recreation. Purchased in 2009, a master plan aims to minimize alterations to the property, so the appearance of the landscape will change very little when the plan is fully implemented. Maryland State Parks are “Trash Free”. Please practice “Leave No Trace” principles and take your trash with you when you leave.

New Paddle-In Camping Opportunities on the Potomac River

Photo by Mark OdellThe Maryland Department of Natural Resources and National Park Service announced the completion of a project to expand and enhance paddle-in camping opportunities in Southern Maryland. The improved access allows longer overnight paddling excursions along the Potomac River with beautiful landing spots at Point Lookout State Park and Newtowne Neck State Park, both located in St. Mary’s County.

Newtowne Neck offers a more primitive camping experience, with beautiful views of the bays and river, miles of sandy beach, and new trails through the property’s forests and meadows. The construction of two new primitive paddle-in campsites, located to provide a quiet and secluded “backcountry” experience, are ideal for multiday and overnight paddling trips on Breton Bay, Potomac River and St. Clement's Bay.
