Fish Stocking for Private Landowners

With few local sources of fish for stocking private waterbodies in Maryland, most fish are obtained from out-of-state suppliers. The department regulates the species of fish permitted to enter the state, and requires suppliers to provide fish health information about their stocks to be approved. A link to approved suppliers and fish species for the current year is found below.

A fish stocking permit is required by the department from persons who only stock any Maryland waterbody. There is no fee for this permit. The form can be filled out and submitted electronically, by fax or by mail. Permits typically expire at the end of a calendar year.

The permit is required before introducing any species and may not permit certain species of fish or invertebrates to be stocked if there is the potential to harm or affect to other natural resources.
