Scientists use the Chesapeake Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve in Maryland (CBNERR-MD) to study unspoiled wetlands, but they are not the only ones. Teachers, students and the general public are welcome too! Our education program strives to share the results of our research and teach about how we can help you explore and study the Chesapeake Bay.
The education programs at the Chesapeake Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve in Maryland provide field experiences for students (pre-school through college), educators, and public audiences. The programs are designed to enhance awareness and understanding of estuaries and emphasize the connection of the bay and human activities. Field programs include the exploration of wetlands, salt marshes, underwater grasses, and shallow water habitats. They include a combination of fish collection, crabs and other invertebrate sampling, as well as water quality, forest, and watershed studies.
The Reserves field programs inform participants about estuarine habitats and the organisms that exist there while experiencing the environment first-hand. Kayaks, pontoon boats, canoes, hiking trails, and boardwalks are used to gain access to a diverse set of field sites. While accessing these remote sites, particular attention is paid to the safety and comfort of participants and our guiding principle is that all participants will have a safe, informative and enjoyable experience.

Our goal is to help you bring science to life for you and your students through the use of authentic research and data collected in your regional estuary. Numerous field based, standard aligned programs are offered throughout the Reserve’s components and can be modified to meet the needs of your students.
Estuaries are an incredible resource for learning about the environment and the way in which humans influence that environment.
