Prothonotary Paddle on the Pocomoke

Welcome to the Prothonotary Paddle at Pocomoke River State Park! This BONUS QUEST will take you on an exciting paddling adventure through the Great Cypress Swamp. You will uncover fun and interesting facts about a special migratory bird species- the Prothonotary Warbler and what makes this habitat ideal for this unique bird species.

Instructions: Begin at the Shad Landing Marina, you will begin your paddle in search of numbered posts along the water trail. The numbered post will have the Park Quest information sign where you will find the clues to fill in all the blanks on the BONUS QUEST worksheet.

Paddling Tip: When you leave the marina, start by turning left and always keep the land mass (island) to your right. By doing this, you’ll be led back to where you started paddling. This is a flatwater, easy paddle, although wind and tide can affect the ease of paddle.

This BONUS QUEST is available at Pocomoke River State Park- Shad Landing. We recommend printing a worksheet, map and have a plan to make the most of your visit in advance. Activity worksheets are also located at the Check-In Station/Administration Building at the Shad Landing park entrance and at the Marina in a weatherproof container for self-serve availability.

Pocomoke’s BONUS QUEST will be open beginning Memorial Weekend, May 28th through Labor Day, September 6th, 2021. Park hours are Sunrise-Sunset.

You can bring your own vessels for the BONUS QUEST. Canoe and Kayak rentals are also available at the Shad Landing Marina boat house and available on a first-come, first served basis.

  • Length of Time to complete the bonus quest: Approximately 1 to 2 hours of paddling.
  • Accessibility: We will make any reasonable accommodations to assist paddlers in boarding a canoe or kayak.
  • Pets are permitted in all day-use areas in the Shad Landing Area, as well as the Acorn Trail and Water’s Edge camping loops.
