Year of the Woman: Suffragists, and the Suffragist Hikes of 1912-1914

Your Quest is to step briefly into the place of four famous Garrett County Women and Suffragists, while exploring Sang Run State Park. 2020 is the Year of the Woman in Maryland, celebrating the 100th anniversary of women’s right to vote in America.

Park Information

Step back in time at Sang Run State Park and the Historic Friends Store. A homestead, formerly known as Friends Delight, dates back to the early 1800’s. The original home site, farm and store were donated to Maryland in 2008 and designated as a State Park in 2017. Hike, fish, picnic or sit and relax along the Wild and Scenic Youghiogheny River. A mile-long trail traverses the agricultural farm fields highlighting large old trees, wildflower meadows and passes by a private family cemetery. Sang Run State Park has a waterless toilet facility.

After turning off of Rt 219 onto Sang Run Road, Sang Run State Park can be found 4 miles past Wisp Resort at:

Park Quest begins at Friends Store at Sang Run State Park and ends at the Election House. Questers should bring their own supplies- including a print out of the worksheets​, clipboard and writing utensil. The quest will include exploration throughout the park on mowed grass and paved surfaces and is not suitable for wheelchairs or strollers. Most of the quest is easy with some sections becoming moderate due to incline. The Sang Run State Park quest is roughly 1 mile and can expect to be completed in 1-2 hours. Park Quest is available at Sang Run State Park daily through Labor Day from 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
