Rising Sun Pond

Located in Cecil County

Physical/ Habitat Description - Rising Sun is one acre in size and has a maximum depth of 11 ft. There are four benches near the pond where people may sit and fish. The shallow areas are covered with a rooted aquatic vegetation called elodea. This plant makes excellent cover for fish to live in, however the elodea is hard to control and can be a nuisance. Each spring a special dye is applied to the pond to control the elodea. This dye is biodegradable and is not harmful to fish or humans.

Fish Species - Rising Sun Pond is a standard bass/bluegill lake and is managed as such. Good numbers and sizes of largemouth bass and smallmouth bass and bluegills are present. Anglers should be prepared to use weedless lures to fish around the aquatic vegetation. Anglers may also catch other species including: white and black crappie, pumpkinseed sunfish, common carp and stocked trout during the spring.

Restrictions - No gas motors. Electric trolling motors are recommended. Camping and swimming are prohibited. There are no boat launching ramps.

History - Rising Sun Pond located in Rising Sun, Maryland was created in 1953. The Maryland Department of Natural Resources, Fisheries Service, Freshwater Fisheries Division, owns and manages the pond to provide a public angling resource. Fiscal resources for this work, and maintenance of the grounds, comes from fishing license sales and the Federal Aid and Restoration Fund ( Dingell-Johnson Act).

Trout are stocked each spring to allow for a special provision where only persons under 16 years old, persons 65 years old and older, and the legally blind can fish between March 1 and May 15. On May 16, the pond returns to limited harvest with no age restrictions.
