Volunteer with us!
Volunteers make all the difference here at Sandy Point State Park! Complementing the work of year-round and seasonal staff, volunteers make it possible to complete projects and offer programs that make the park and visitor experience so much better. If you find yourself with a little extra time to spare, and want to spend it at the park, give volunteering with us a try! We have opportunities for different ages, interests, and skill levels. Check out some of our in demand opportunities below.
Volunteer Naturalist

Lead engaging and educational programs for park visitors of all ages. Use your expertise, interests, and love of parks to plan and lead a program for visitors with the help of staff. Examples of programs include guided hikes, arts and crafts, and demonstrations of recreational activities (e.g. fishing). Nature center programs are essential to helping visitors connect to nature and history in the park!
Litter Clean Up

Join us in our ongoing effort to pick up litter at Sandy Point! As one of the Maryland’s busiest state parks, Sandy Point staff holds back a tide of trash left by park visitors & washed in from the Chesapeake Bay. We welcome individuals and groups of all kinds to assist us in protecting our natural resources and creating an inviting recreational space for all.
Invasive Plant Removal

Volunteers will identify and remove invasive plants from within the park's property to prevent them from spreading and to promote healthy growth for Maryland native flora. Their job will include identifying and removing invasive plants, recording data, and communicating any problems to the volunteer coordinator.

Volunteer Feature - Jessie

How long have you volunteered at Sandy Point State Park?
I started in 2018. In 2020 when COVID came along, I couldn’t go anywhere else, so I got special permission to volunteer more hours here since I was able to work outside and away from other people. I was doing other outside volunteer work at the time, but I didn’t like being split between different projects. It took a while to find where I wanted to be, but at Sandy Point I was able to do the most good and really enjoyed it.
Have you lived in the neighboring communities to Sandy Point?
I’ve lived 2 ½ miles from the park since moving here 34 years ago.
What is your work experience?
While I was in college I did temp work, and after I left I had varied jobs from the defense industry to Anne Arundel County Libraries. At one point I worked in textile sales which was fun since I got to travel around the country. After I retired I started seeking out nature related volunteer opportunities. I took the watershed stewards academy class and became a master watershed steward. I did one off volunteer projects with several organizations before finding Sandy Point, where I really got a sense of accomplishment by seeing the difference my efforts made.
What is your favorite thing about Sandy Point State Park?
It’s you guys (the park rangers and staff)! I feel like I always have happy experiences with you guys. It makes a huge difference in my experience volunteering here. I also like the wildlife, and the park visitors.
Why is it important to you to volunteer?
Because I’ve had a great life, and I’m fortunate that I’ve been able to give back. My way of giving back is giving mother nature a helping hand. I’ve discovered I do have a passion for it!
