Volunteer Opportunities at Point Lookout, Greenwell, St. Mary's River, St. Clements Island & Newtowne Neck State Parks

Like to get your hands dirty?

Want to look back at the end of the day with a feeling of accomplishment? Clear trails after storms (or the winter off-season), build water bars, repair trails damaged by storms or usage and otherwise help to keep our network of trails in tip-top shape.

A strong back and the ability to work outside in all weather on potentially rugged terrain is a must. Familiarity with hand and/or power tools, and/or some experience with trail work, are a bonus but not required. Wear weather-appropriate clothing that can get dirty/muddy and sturdy work or hiking boots. Bring a water bottle, work gloves, lunch, as well as sunscreen, bug repellent and rain protection as needed. This is an occasional opportunity and days and times will vary. Please contact the park’s volunteer coordinator Jonas Williams at 301-872-5688.

Volunteer Mounted Patrol (VMP)

Volunteer mounted patrol are the “eyes and ears” of the park. These volunteer rangers patrol the park on horseback, assisting park guests, reporting trail maintenance issues and reporting other problems and violations. All VMPs must provide their own horse and be 18 years of age or older. Interested persons should start volunteering through different opportunities at the park. After accruing 40 hours of volunteer service within the park, the volunteer attends training for volunteer ranger certification and is provided a uniform. After receiving certification, the volunteer commits to 100 hours of service per year. If you are interested but do not have your own horse, you can also become a volunteer ranger and patrol on foot or in a vehicle.

Volunteer Bike Patrol (VBP)

Do you like to ride your bike in the park? Did you know you can patrol the park on your bike as a member of our volunteer bike patrol? These volunteer rangers provide assistance to park guests, especially mountain bikers and hikers, by offering information and directions. In addition, they report downed trees on trails, washouts and other hazards. All VBPs must provide their own bike and be 18 years of age. Interested persons should start volunteering through different opportunities at the park. After accruing 40 hours of volunteer service within the park, the volunteer attends training for volunteer ranger certification and is provided a uniform. After receiving certification, the volunteer commits to 100 hours of service per year. If you are interested but do not have your own bike, you can also become a volunteer ranger and patrol on foot or in a vehicle.

If any of these volunteer opportunities interest you or if you have any questions, please call Point Lookout State Park at 301-872-5688 or e-mail Jonas Williams at jonas.williams@maryland.gov.
