Chapman State Park is made up of 2,254 acres of various and unique habitats along the shore of the Potomac River in Charles County, of which 694 acres have been designated State Wildlands. The park has also bee designated an Important Bird Area by the National Audubon Society because of its significance to wild birds. Our Park Quest this year will introduce you to the world of birding and community science, where you will become real life Community Science Ornithologists. You will visit different habitats and identify and record your habitat observations and bird sightings along the way. Resources that can help you with this quest include the following: color coded quest map of CSP, a copy of the CSP Bird Field Checklist (both above), and the free apps eBird and Audubon Bird Guide App. The hours of this quest are from Sunrise to Sunset, when the park is open.

Park Information

CSP takes its name from the family of Nathaniel Chapman’s Family, who bought the property known as Grimes Ditch in 1740 and had close ties with the families of Founding Fathers George Washington and George Mason. It is home to Mt Aventine, the historic family home built by Person Chapman in 1840, and is where the family ran its fishery and ferry businesses. From the 1950’s to 1980’s, the property was owned Hungarian Countess Countess Margit Bessenyey, who raised Hungarian Horses.
