Belt Woods Canopy
Photograph by R. Harrison Wiegand | Each spring this stand of Tulip-trees (Liriodendron tulipifera) buds much as it did before Columbus sailed to the New World 500 years ago. This is Belt Woods, a 40 acre woodland in Prince Georges County that has experienced little artificial disturbance.
The density of birds breeding at Belt Woods is among the highest observed on the East Coast. The State Threatened Glade Fern (Diplazium pycnocarpon) and the State Endangered Wister’s Coralroot (Corallorhiza wisteriana) grow here. |
