About Environmental Literacy in MD

​Maryland has strong commitments to environmental literacy supported by state agencies, local nonprofits, school districts, and other partners. As a signatory of the Chesapeake Bay Program 2014 Watershed Agreement, Maryland has committed to the Environmental Literacy Goal to enable students in the region to graduate with the knowledge and skills to act responsibly to protect and restore their local watershed. Within Maryland, the State’s Department of Education (MSDE) leads Maryland’s local school systems and other stakeholders to develop scientific and environmental literacy graduates through Maryland’s Environmental Literacy Standards. The Code of Maryland Regulations (COMAR) 13A.04.17.01, Requirements for Environmental Literacy Instructional Programs for Grades Prekindergarten - 12 states that each local school education agency “shall provide in public schools a comprehensive, multi-disciplinary environmental literacy program infused within current curricular offerings and aligned with the Maryland Environmental Literacy Standards.​
