Tree-Mendous Maryland helps communities plant, care for, and steward trees and forests across Maryland. The program provides access to native trees at reduced cost and supports community forestry work that improves the health and long-term care of trees and forests.
Tree-Mendous serves schools, local governments, community and civic organizations, nonprofits, and other eligible groups working on public lands, community open spaces, school grounds, rights-of-way, and other eligible community sites.
Since its creation, Tree-Mendous has supported tree planting in more than 3,000 communities, parks, and schools statewide.
Request Tree-Mendous Trees
Tree-Mendous provides native trees and shrubs at reduced cost through a contract nursery. Available species, sizes, and prices vary by season, with orders generally coordinated for spring and fall planting.
To request trees, complete the
Community Forestry Catalyst Fund (CF2) application. The application collects basic information about the applicant and planting location, then directs applicants seeking Tree-Mendous trees to the questions needed for their tree request.
Tree-Mendous trees may be used for eligible community planting projects on public lands, community open spaces, school grounds, rights-of-way, and similar sites. The program is not intended for individual residential plantings.
Applicants requesting only Tree-Mendous trees do not need to develop a larger community forestry project or complete the full CF2 project application.
Funding for Community Forestry Projects
Tree-Mendous also helps support broader community forestry work through the
Community Forestry Catalyst Fund (CF2).
CF2 is the Maryland Forest Service’s statewide grant program for forestry work in communities. It can support planting and establishment care, management of existing trees and wooded areas, forest health, stewardship, education, planning, and other work that helps communities understand and care for their forest resources.
Applicants submit one application rather than trying to determine which state funding program fits their project. The Maryland Forest Service reviews selected projects against the funding available and determines which source, or combination of sources, can support the work. Tree-Mendous is one of the funding sources that may support eligible projects.
Marylanders Plant Trees
Maryland residents who want to plant a tree at their home can use
Marylanders Plant Trees, which provides a coupon toward the purchase of eligible native trees from participating nurseries.
The program also provides information on eligible tree species, participating nurseries, and choosing an appropriate tree for your property. Additional guidance is available through the Maryland Forest Service’s tree planting and care resources and Tree Owner’s Manual.
Support Tree-Mendous
Marylanders can support tree planting and community forestry across the state through Tree-Mendous.
Through the
Gift of Trees program, individuals and organizations can make a contribution in honor or memory of someone or to recognize a birthday, anniversary, holiday, or other occasion. A certificate is sent to the recipient acknowledging the gift. Contributions support native tree planting and care through public and community projects across Maryland.
Maryland vehicle owners can also make a voluntary Tree-Mendous contribution when registering or renewing a vehicle through the Motor Vehicle Administration. These contributions help support community tree planting, care, and stewardship across the state.
