In celebration of our 120th anniversary, the Maryland Forest Service is sponsoring a new Fire Prevention Month Smokey Bear poster contest for 7th grade students across Maryland.
Students will use original artwork inspired by a statewide theme to explore wildfire safety, forest conservation, and Smokey Bear’s message. The contest combines creativity and science while helping students understand how they can protect Maryland’s forests from wildfire.
In honor of the inaugural year of this poster contest, the theme is Smokey’s classic message:

The Fire Prevention Month Smokey Bear poster serves as a broader conversation about forests, wildfire safety, natural resource preservation, and what students can do to remain safe in the forest with fire.
Contest Basics
The contest is open to all Maryland 7th grade classrooms and homeschool groups. One entry may be submitted from each school to be judged regionally before advancing to statewide judging. Entries should be submitted by Nov. 2. It is recommended that schools set an earlier deadline by 1-2 weeks to allow ample time for in-school judging.

Teachers of winning students will be notified directly in late November to mid December. Statewide winners will receive a Smokey Bear fire danger sign for their school, helping turn student artwork into a lasting reminder of wildfire safety and Smokey Bear’s message.
