Bordering both the Big and Little Gunpowder Falls to their confluence at Days Cove, the Central Area features many miles of multi-use trails and opportunities for fishing. It features the historic milling village of Jerusalem Mill, which also serves as headquarters for Gunpowder Falls State Park.

Hikers, pets on leashes and horseback riders are welcome on all of the Central Area’s trails. Mountain bikers are welcome on many trails, but they are prohibited in the Sweathouse Branch Wildlands Area on the Big Gunpowder between Harford Road and Belair Road (U.S. 1). The Sweathouse Branch Wildlands Area features several loop trails through hardwood forest along the banks of the Big Gunpowder. Birders and wildflower enthusiasts will enjoy these trails.

The Big and Little Gunpowder Falls are both stocked with trout in put-and-take fishing areas. Anglers 16 years-of-age and older must possess a Maryland Non-Tidal Fishing License. For more information, visit the Maryland DNR Fisheries website.
The Big Gunpowder River in this section offers opportunities for both novice and advanced paddlers. Access to the Big Gunpowder is available at Belair Road and Jones Road. The more difficult section of the river lies between Belair Road and Jones Road. The section downriver from Jones Road is considered easier, providing canoeists and kayakers the opportunity to paddle into the coastal plain beyond the confluence of the Big and Little Gunpowder Falls.
Personal flotation devices are required for all persons canoeing, kayaking and tubing on the river. Helmets are required for kayakers using the river between Belair Road and Jones Road.
Organized youth group camping with a permit is available at Camp Cone. The site features primitive camping, fire rings and tables. No potable water. An amphitheater is also available for programs. Please be advised that there is not a physical address for this location.

Locating Camp Cone: From Harford Road (MD-147), turn onto Sharon Drive. When you reach Camp Cone Road, turn left. The park is located at the very end of Camp Cone Road. There will be a designated turn around and a park sign by the main gate.
Pets on leashes are welcome, except at Camp Cone and inside the buildings at Jerusalem Mill.
The Graham Equestrian Center (GEC) is located in Gunpowder Falls State Park. The GEC is a non-profit organization that provides an equestrian component to the park’s objective of nature tourism, and to that end, GEC, Inc. promotes and offers educational opportunities to the citizens of Maryland.
