Special Projects
In addition to regular monitoring activities, the Maryland Department of Natural Resources also supports special studies to further our understanding of the Bay’s natural processes and the effects of nutrient enrichment on water and habitat quality.
Past topics of study have included: measuring the exchange of oxygen and nutrients between Bay sediments and the water column; determining the settling rate of particulates to Bay bottom waters; evaluating nutrient management goals; developing new monitoring technologies; and conducting data analyses to assess habitat criteria for dissolved oxygen and water clarity. With a better understanding of the Chesapeake Bay’s biological and physical processes, scientists and managers can develop improved strategies for restoring the Bay.
