Description:
The NCR-Hereford Volunteer Association is excited to lead a guided bicycle ride from White Hall to the Pennsylvania border and back along the former route of the Northern Central Railroad. Enjoy scenic views of the Little Falls and Beetree Run as we bike through exposed geologic formations and experience history. The trail has a gentle grade and is well maintained. Participants will need to bring their own bicycling equipment, water, and snacks. We will not ride in snow or heavy rain.

North Point State Park

First Day Hike at North Point State Park - Ranger-led Hike

Description:
See the sunrise over the ancient Black Marsh and stand on the edge of the bay to take in the first day of the new year. This flat trail follows an old trolley line through the woods, past an old power station, and looks East over the bay toward Pleasure Island and the Craig Hill Light. This hike offers no more than 21 feet of elevation change with excellent bird watching and photography.

Additional Details:
Leashed pets are welcome, please wear appropriate footwear as the trail can sometimes be wet. Be sure to bring water! Porta-pots are available at the meeting area. There is $3 In-State Fee and $5 Out-of-State Fee to enter the park, and provides all day access to the park.

Description:
Join North Point State Park Rangers and volunteers in a short walk through the woods and a long the waterfront to find natural (and maybe not so natural) accessories to delightful crafts! Once participants have collected their materiels, they will return to the Visitor Center to build crafts like wooden looms, bookmarks, biodegradable bird feeders, and more. This event is designed for families with children between the ages of 5 and 10, but can be enjoyed by all who attend. Parents must remain with their children through the entire program. This is a rain or shine event.

Additional Details:
No pets are allowed in the Visitor Center. Hot chocolate will be available to participants. Please bring appropriate footwear and clothing for a short walk. There is $3 In-State Fee and $5 Out-of-State Fee to enter the park, and provides all day access to the park.

​Hike into the New Year with a ranger along the Wapiti Pond Trail. During this 1.5 mile moderate hike, experience the peaceful views of the Wapiti Pond and learn about the local fauna and flora. Following the hike, enjoy a campfire and hot chocolate at the Nature Center amphitheater. Meet at the Nature Center, located in the campground.​

This hike is not stroller accessible as portions of the single track trail are inclined and may be slippery. This is a pet free hike; please leave your pets at home. Description:
"Ring" in the New Years with a hike to the Turkey Point Light Station on this 0.8 mile out-and-back gravel trail. Experience the newly renovated entrance road, parking lot, and reconstructed bell tower. Stroll through meadows and wooded areas before coming to the iconic beacon of the park with expansive views of the head of the Chesapeake Bay. Volunteers with Turkey Point Light Station Inc. will open the lighthouse to climbers from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on January 1.​

Start your year off with an invigorating hike! Join our Ranger Team at the Upper Covered Bridge Lot to enjoy the beautiful Orange Trail and parts of our old-growth woodlands. This route will cover moderately steep and uneven terrain. The full route is 5 miles, with an optional short-cut on the way back which will reduce the length to about 3 miles. A warming campfire stop is included on the final leg.

Our most popular first day hike! This "moderate" hike starts at our historical Jerusalem Mill village and takes us to the Little Gunpowder trail along the Gunpowder River. This hike includes shallow stream crossings and some small inclines. Park-guided hikes will start at 8:00 AM and Noon.

Description:
Hike the Flint Mill Trail at Palmer State Park to view the ruins of the Husband Flint Furnace. This trail follows Deer Creek for about a mile with some great viewing spots. See some great rock outcroppings as you hike through the woods. The Flint Mill Trail is a "U"-shaped extension of the Iron Works Trail. To hike the Flint Mill trail you will first begin on the Hornbeam Trail (either direction) and follow it until you reach the Intersection with the Iron Works Trail, then follow the Iron Works Trail until you reach the intersection with the Flint Mill Trail.

Leashed pets are welcome. Trail is not wheelchair of stroller accessible. No fee. No restrooms. The parking lot at Palmer State Park is small. If full, please visit at a later time.

Description:
Celebrate the New Year with Maryland’s annual First Day Hike! Enjoy a self-guided, 3.7-mile loop hike along the Lakeshore Trail, featuring scenic winter views and chances to spot local wildlife. Stop by our Welcome Table near the Recycled Tire Playground to pick up a map, explore with field guides and scavenger hunt activities, or test your knowledge with trivia games! Don’t forget to grab your “I Hiked 2025” sticker and take a photo at our selfie station to commemorate your adventure and warm up with some coffee and hot chocolate, served as supplies last by the Friends of Seneca Creek State Park. Please wear comfortable hiking shoes, dress appropriately for the weather, and bring plenty of drinking water.

Looking for a new way to ring in the New Year? Meet the Friends of Calvert Cliffs and park staff at the pavilion at 10:30 PM on December 31st to close out 2024 with a 1.8 mile hike on the Red Trail to the Chesapeake Bay. We will count down the new year with a bonfire lit at midnight and s'mores. Then celebrate the New Year with your first hike of 2025 while enjoying the sights and sounds of wetland wildlife that you don't get to see during the day. We will hike as a group both ways, please come prepared with a flashlight, water, and weather appropriate clothing.

This hike will take place on a natual trail in the dark, please bring a flashlight, water, and dress appropriately for cold weather. Bathrooms available at the entrance of the park, and porta potties near the beach. Round trip hike is 3.6 miles.

Description:
Come to Smallwood State Park for a guided bird hike with Ranger Jones while enjoying the beautiful colors and songs that are flying all over the park. On this hike, we'll explore various habitats that winter birds rely on. Along the way, we'll learn about some of the adaptations that help birds endure winter weather and about the foods they eat during this season. This hike is approximately .75 miles and starts at 9:30 AM at the Sweden Point Discovery Center.

Additional Details:
The trail is flat though woodland and meadow areas. Please dress for the weather and be sure to bring drinking water and snacks. Because we will be looking for birds, we ask that you leave your pet(s) at home so we don't scare off any potential feathered sights. Bring binoculars if you have them. Suitable for all ages. Join us at 10:00 AM at the Sweden Point Discovery Center where we will begin our walk down to the Mattawoman Creek footbridge. Enjoy views of marsh land, historic area, General Smallwood's Retreat House, and wooded areas that span just over 2 miles.

Join Merkle staff for a hike of the Mounds Trail! Join Ranger Steve at Rosaryville Pavilion #1 for a 2 mile hike through the forests and meadows of beautiful Prince George's County. This hike will follow a forested section of the Perimeter Trail, loop through meadows once a part of the Mount Airy Mansion Estate, and return back to the Pavilion Area. Participants are encouraged to dress for the weather with sturdy hiking boots or trail shoes. Leashed pets are more than welcome to join in!

Start 2025 off by trying out a new hobby: Birding. Join Janes Island State Park Rangers and volunteers for a flat, two mile hike that will teach you the basics of birding. This hike will take place at Irish Grove, an approximately 2,300 acre nature preserve on the Pocomoke Sound that is owned by the Maryland Ornithological Society. We will meet in the Camper Check-In Parking Lot at Janes Island and then caravan to Irish Grove. (Approximately a 10-minute drive away.)

Description:
The Yellow Trail at Pocomoke River State Park is a flat, wooded path that begins at our Nature Center, where visitors can view native reptiles as well as pick up their "I Hiked" sticker before heading out. This scenic trail winds through shaded woodlands along the Pocomoke River, passing towering loblolly pines and cypress trees. Hikers may spot native birds, deer, and other wildlife, making it a peaceful escape into nature and an excellent spot for birdwatching and photography.

Additional Details:
Leashed pets are welcome on the trail. The yellow trail is unpaved and may be challenging for strollers. Pocomoke River State Park is a fee-free park. The nearest restrooms are located directly beneath the camp store. There will be a porta john set-up for the hike in the Nature Center parking lot.
