Trail Map

Step back in time at Sang Run State Park. A homestead, formerly known as Friends Delight, dates back to the early 1800’s. The original home site, farm and store were donated to Maryland in 2008 and designated as a State Park in 2017. Visit the Historic Friends Store and Election House and learn how people bought goods, and voted in the 1920s. Hike, fish, picnic or sit and relax along the Wild and Scenic Youghiogheny River. Hike the over 2.5 mile trail system at the park. The trails traverse pollinator meadows, pass large champion trees and a private family cemetery. During the summer and falls months nature programs such as hay rides, guided hikes, and Dutch oven demonstrations are held. The park has a waterless toilet facility in the Friends Store parking lot. Sang Run State Park is managed by the Deep Creek Lake State Park Complex.

Restored Election House

The Sang Run Election House is the only documented standing election house in Western Maryland. The building was constructed in 1872 and had a complete restoration that was completed in 2020. Twenty-five Presidential elections were held inside the Sang Run Election House. The final use of this election house was for the election between Richard Nixon and George McGovern in 1972. The election house was not only a place to cast your vote but a voice of the community. In 1914 seven women marched through Garrett and Allegany counties seeking support for women's suffrage and the right to vote. Sang Run's election house was one of their stops to gain support during their 110 mile journey. These efforts helped pave the way for the passage of the 19th Amendment in 1920. Head out to Sang Run State Park and visit this standing piece of history within Garrett County.
