Wolf Den Run State Park

​

ORV and Trail Use

Wolf Den Run State Park comprises three distinct parcels, including approximately three miles of frontage on the Potomac River’s North Branch, three brook trout streams, 1,700 acres of mixed forest, and unique rocky bluffs rising 900 feet above the Potomac River. All three parcels include areas of rugged, mountainous terrain with numerous ephemeral streams, meadows, small tributaries, and wetlands.

Historically, all of the parcels were mined for coal. Evidence of the former mining activity is present in the bench-cut terrain that characterizes various parts of each tract, providing a variety of challenging trails for hiking or riding. Recreational opportunities now include Off-Road-Vehicle (ORV) riding, hiking and biking trails. Currently no facilities or amenities are present at these locations.​

Service Charge:

Maryland Residents

  • $10 per day/person — motorized users (drivers + passengers)
  • $3 per day/vehicle — all other visitors

​ Out-of-State Residents

  • $12 per day/person — motorized users (drivers + passengers)
  • $5 per day/vehicle — all other visitors
  • Free with MPS Passport (up to four machines on a single trailer)

Park Rules

  • Alcoholic beverages are prohibited.
  • ​All vehicles must have a DNR OHV Sticker and/or MD Motor Vehicle Administration Registration to operate on State Lands.
  • Only one (1) rider per OHV is permitted, unless OHV is designed and manufactured to carry passengers.
  • All operators and passengers must wear an approved helmet.
  • Any operator or passenger under the age of 16 must be under the direct supervision and within eyesight of their parent or guardian at all times.
  • Obey all signs, gates, barriers and stay on marked trails.
  • Be aware of oncoming traffic, particularly in blind curves and hills.
  • Operate at reasonable speeds and under control at all times.
  • All vehicles must possess proper noise suppression system and spark arrestor according to state law.
  • Do not operate in a manner that damages property, wildlife and vegetation. OHV use in campground is prohibited.
  • ​Pets must be leashed at all times.
  • Riders are responsible for any losses, damages or injuries that may occur while riding.

Facts about Huckleberry Rocks

  • 12.5 miles of trail available for motorized recreation, 6.5 miles open to full-size vehicles.
  • The Wallow (Trail 0204) is a string of seasonally-filled depressions. You will get wet! Bypass via Trail 0202.
  • Local history says the craggy terrain in The Pit is the result of failed exploration for minerals. Trail 0302 is a single-direction run along one of the resulting ridges.
  • Race Track is the site of a former competitive course. Test your​self and your machine on the remains of the track’s features.
  • Trail 0106 is a steep rugged hill climb rising approx. 150 vertical feet. Can you make it to the top?

Facts about Potomac River Area

  • Parking at the Shallmar lot is limited. Additional parking is available at the Huckleberry Rock entrance.
  • This area’s severe terrain is a legacy of coal mining. The slag pile is over burden from these operations – challenge your machines on its steep slopes.
  • Fisherman’s Camp Foot Trail provides hiking access to Potomac State Forest’s Lost Land Run.
  • Picnic facilities are available along the river adjacent to the Shallmar lot (machine access prohibited).
  • Coal Haul Road is a shared access for connected landowners, including the State Park. Respect park neighbors and stay on the trail.
  • There is no direct access to Wolf Den Run State Park’s other riding areas. Use North Hill and Coal Haul roads (appropriate County ORV permit required).

Facts about North Hill Area

  • There is no trailer parking at North Hill. Visitors who have trailers must park at Huckleberry Rocks or Potomac River.
  • All of the North Hill trails are located north of Wolf Den Run. Continue on entry route (Trail 1101) across bridge for trail access.
  • Trail 1103 is the direct route to the top – will your vehicle make the climb?
  • Wolf Den Run is a naturally producing trout stream. Help DNR protect this important natural resource by staying on trail and riding softly along its banks.
  • Coal Haul Road is a shared access for connected landowners, including the State Park. Respect park neighbors and stay on the trail.
  • There is no direct access to Wolf Den Run State Park’s other riding areas. Use North Hill and Coal Haul roads (appropriate County ATV permit required).
