Pocomoke River State Park offers a wide variety of hiking opportunities for all ages and skill levels. Whether you’re looking to stretch your legs with your furry companion or embark on a full-day adventure, our trails provide a chance to explore the beauty and diversity of this special region.

Hiking at the park changes with the seasons:

  • Fall: A hiker's favorite season, with cooler temperatures, colorful foliage, and fewer insects.
  • Winter: Serene trails with improved birding opportunities and the quiet beauty of snow-dusted landscapes.
  • Spring: Vibrant blooms, chirping birds, and active wildlife bring the forest to life.
  • Summer: Beat the heat with shorter, shaded trails or cool off with water trails near the river.

Ranger-Recommended Hikes

Shad Landing Trail Network​

Nearly 3 miles of marked trails start near the Nature Center. Highlights include the Trail of Change, a 0.75-mile loop exploring plant and water changes. Accessible from the marina parking lot, this trail is wet in places—waterproof footwear is recommended.

Bald Cypress Trail​

Located at Milburn Landing, this short, family-friendly trail winds through a bald cypress swamp. Visit at sunrise or sunset to hear or spot Barred Owls in their natural habitat.

Milburn Landing Trail

This 3.7-mile loop begins near the Milburn Landing Campground and traverses upland pine and hardwood forests, as well as bald cypress bottomlands. Part of the trail overlaps with the Algonquin Cross County Trail, which allows horses and non-motorized bikes.

Algonquin Cross County Trail ​

A 12.5-mile trail connecting Foster Tract Public Recreation Area to Milburn Landing State Park. This full-day hike or overnight trek features parking at both trailheads and multiple access points.

Old Furnace Loop Trails​ 

Three loops of varying lengths:

  • Red Furnace Loop (6.2 miles): Connects Furnace Town to the Algonquin Cross County Trail, passing through diverse habitats.
  • Orange Furnace Loop (3.9 miles): Medium-length trail with varied forest landscapes.
  • Yellow Furnace Loop (1.8 miles): The shortest loop with rare shortleaf pine and oak forest ecosystems.

Hudson-Tarr Bike Trail and Mattaponi Soft Launch​ 

An 8.5-mile single-track bike trail near Shad Landing that also supports hiking. The nearby Mattaponi soft launch allows small watercraft access, such as kayaks and canoes, for those combining paddling and hiking adventures.

  • Wear sturdy shoes suitable for uneven terrain.

One of our largest pavilions, the Manokin Pavilion accommodates up to 180 guests and is conveniently located near trails, a playground, a boat launch, and the camp store. Amenities include:

Accomac Pavilion

Perfect for smaller events, the Accomac Pavilion accommodates up to 50 guests and offers an affordable option near the athletic fields. Ideal for intimate family gatherings or birthday parties, it is equipped with picnic tables and has nearby restroom access in the Robins Nest camping loop.

  • Backcountry Camping: For a rugged, off-the-grid experience, head to our Mataponi Ponds location. These primitive campsites require you to pack in and pack out everything you bring. Fishing access is available both by boat and from various land-based locations within the park:

  • Shad Landing: Fish from the marina docks or at the fishing pond.

While hunting is not permitted within the boundaries of Pocomoke River State Park, the park is surrounded by over 18,000 acres of Pocomoke State Forest, which offers excellent hunting opportunities. The park provides comfortable accommodations for hunters during the season and convenient river access to reach remote hunting areas.

Hunting Opportunities in Pocomoke State Forest

Hunting is one of the most popular recreational activities in Pocomoke State Forest. The area supports a variety of game birds and mammals, including:

  • Common Game: Wild turkey, white-tailed deer, and gray squirrels.
  • Upland Game (less common): Eastern cottontail rabbits, bobwhite quail, mourning doves, and American woodcock. These species are typically found in recently harvested forest areas or near open land habitats, including private agricultural lands.
  • Waterfowl: The forest's aquatic habitats—such as the Pocomoke River, its tributaries, and surrounding swamps and marshes—support species like wood ducks and mallards.

Hunting Guidelines

  • Hunting with rifles, handguns, shotguns, bows, and muzzleloaders is allowed in designated areas, in accordance with state and federal laws.
  • Prohibited Activities: Target shooting and the possession or use of weapons outside of regular hunting seasons are not permitted in State Forests.
  • Temporary hunting stands are allowed but must be removed or dismantled at the end of each day.
  • Hunting seasons and regulations in Pocomoke State Forest align with Maryland’s state and federal guidelines.

Paddle Adventures: Canoeing or Kayaking

Shad Landing is the ideal spot for a family paddle! Located on Corker’s Creek, a peaceful tributary of the Pocomoke River, it’s surrounded by forest, offering protection and calm waters for an easy, enjoyable experience. The short, 1-mile paddle takes about 45 minutes to an hour, perfect for kids and parents alike. No boat? No problem! Boat rentals are available on-site, so all you need to bring is your sense of adventure.

Fishing Fun

Introduce your kids to the joy of fishing! Both areas of the park provide excellent year-round fishing opportunities, whether you’re an expert or trying it for the first time. The river and pond are home to a variety of fish, and kids under 16 can fish without a license when accompanied by a licensed adult. Forgot your gear? We’ve got you covered with bait and tackle available for purchase.

Hit the Trails: Hiking

Explore the park’s scenic trails with the whole family. The flat, easy-to-navigate paths are perfect for kids, and our team keeps them well-maintained for your enjoyment. Pocomoke River State Park welcomes you and your pet to enjoy the great outdoors together!

To ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone—and to protect park resources, wildlife, and other visitors—please follow these guidelines. Responsible pet ownership is essential to keep our parks pet-friendly for years to come.

Definition of a Pet

  • Pets include domesticated animals such as cats and dogs.
  • Farm animals (e.g., cattle, goats, sheep, and swine) are not considered pets under this policy.
  • Horses are allowed only on designated trails in the Pocomoke State Forest.

Park Rules for Pets

Licensing & Vaccinations

  • Pets must be licensed and up-to-date on vaccinations, including rabies.

Leashes

  • ​Pets must be kept on a leash at all times unless swimming in designated areas or hunting (with a valid permit).

Clean-Up

  • Please clean up after your pet. Waste disposal bins are provided in most areas.

Service Animals

  • Service animals are welcome in all pedestrian areas, including buildings and playgrounds.

Restricted Areas

  • Pets (excluding service animals) are not allowed in park buildings or playgrounds.
  • Follow posted signs indicating areas where pets are not permitted.

Noise Control

  • To maintain a peaceful environment, excessive barking is not allowed, especially during campground quiet hours (10:00 p.m. – 7:00 a.m.).

  • Pets are allowed in all camping loops except the Robins Nest camping loop at Shad Landing.

Birdlife at Pocomoke River State Park

Pocomoke River State Park is a year-round birding destination, offering opportunities on foot or by boat. Bird enthusiasts come from near and far to observe the park’s diverse species, including many seasonal and breeding birds.

Highlights by Bird Type:

  • Waterfowl: Common species include Canada Goose, Wood Duck, Mallard, and Hooded Merganser. Pied-billed Grebes and occasional Common Loons can be spotted in colder months.
  • Shorebirds & Waders: Killdeer, Spotted Sandpipers, Great Blue Heron, Green Heron, and Glossy Ibis are frequent sightings. Rare visitors like Snowy and Little Blue Egrets or White Ibis may also appear.
  • Raptors & Owls: Bald Eagles, Ospreys, and Red-shouldered Hawks are plentiful, with seasonal appearances of Broad-winged Hawks. Barred, Great Horned, and Eastern Screech-Owls call the park home.
  • Woodpeckers: Seven species, including Pileated, Red-headed, and Northern Flickers, nest here in good numbers.
  • Warblers: A hotspot for warbler enthusiasts, the park hosts 13 breeding species like Prothonotary, Black-and-white, and Hooded Warblers, along with many migratory species.
  • Forest Birds: Flycatchers, vireos, chickadees, and thrushes thrive in the park’s rich forests, with species like Eastern Phoebe and Wood Thrush frequently observed.

Seasonal Highlights:

Spring and summer bring nesting Yellow-billed Cuckoos, Ruby-throated Hummingbirds, and Blue-gray Gnatcatchers. In fall and winter, look for Hermit Thrushes, Yellow-rumped Warblers, and sparrows like White-throated and Fox. The park’s diverse habitats also support year-round residents like Northern Cardinals, American Goldfinches, and Carolina Wrens.

With over 200 bird species documented, Pocomoke River State Park is a must-visit for birders of all skill levels.

The marina at the Shad Landing area of Pocomoke River State Park is set to undergo renovations, with construction tentatively scheduled to begin in Fall/Winter 2025 and continue throughout the year. During this time, access to the Pocomoke River from the Shad Landing area will be unavailable.

Please note: The marina at Shad Landing will be open for the 2025 summer season.
