Friend's Delight

Visitors will travel around the 77 acre farm at Sang Run discovering historic sites, important people, champion trees and more. Visitors will use a GPS unit for their quest and will be required to locate all the spots and answer associated questions.

Quest Information

The quest is available Wednesday through Sunday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Stop by the Friends Store to pick up one of the GPS units to begin your quest. End at the store for your stamp and stay for a cold soda or ice cream.

The view from the top of the farm is worth the walk. This quest will take about an hour and a half to complete. Only three GPS units are available, so some wait time may be involved. Peak visitation is typically from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The area has access to the Youghiogheny River for rafting and fishing. The farm is a quaint 1880's era location with historic general store, hiking trails, hayrides and interpretive programming. From places on the farm you can stand and only hear nature.

In October of 2008, the Maryland Park Service acquired Friend’s Delight, an 81 acre tract of land, originally settled by John Friend in 1769 after bartering with the Shawnee tribe. The area that is open seasonally to the public includes a picnic shelter near the river and an Appalachian mountain heritage Store. Friend’s Store has been a central point of contact for members of the Friend family and the Sang Run community for well over a century. The Friend family proprietor sold food staples in the tiny store and also bought, sold and traded ginseng for the local folk. Volunteers open the Friend’s Store each Monday in July and August to sell locally hand made crafts and food snacks reminiscent of country living and trade stories of the history of the area. The Youghiogheny River shelter, also known as Friend’s Delight, is available for rental through the Maryland State Park Reservation service.

Directions to the Quest Location

From 219 turn onto Sang Run Road (at the Wisp Ski Resort) and follow the road for approximately two miles where it take a sharp left. Follow two more miles to the Friends Store on the right.
