New single track multi-use trail loop system at Garrett State Forest
On August 18, a new single track multi-use trail loop system was opened at Garrett State Forest. The Trail is
100% open at the present time.

Recreation - Trails
Trail guides featuring a topographic map and trail descriptions can be purchased at the forest headquarters or online. Purchase copies of the Potomac State Forest Trail Guide with a credit card online at

https://www.shopdnr.com/herringtonmanorstatepark.aspx. There may be stream or road crossings or standing water on these trails. Visitors are encouraged to wear blaze orange during the hunting seasons. Remember, you are responsible for having the necessary skills, knowledge, and equipment for a safe and environmentally friendly visit. Potomac-Garrett State Forest has over 80 miles of trails open to hikers, mountain bikers and horseback riders of any ability. Not all trails are open to all recreational pursuits and it is recommended that before engaging in any activity, patrons should visit or contact the state forest headquarters to become aware of any trail restrictions. A backpacking permit ($10/night) must be obtained at the forest headquarters or at any of the self-registration areas.

The Kindness Demonstration Area features a 1.25-mile self-guided hiking trail through 387 acres of forestland with signs explaining forest management and wildlife improvement practices.
Horseback Riding
Horseback riding is allowed on designated, developed and maintained trails and roads designed to accommodate recreational use. Horses are not allowed on the foot trails in the Wilderness Ranch area, the Watchable Wildlife area and the Lostland Run area.
Off Road Vehicles
A variety of off-road vehicle types are permitted only on trail sections that are blazed green. These areas include Snaggy Mountain Road, Burkholder Road and Wallman Road. Riders should consult ORV maps and regulations for each state forest. Trails for
off-road vehicles, (ORV’s and snowmobiles) are available in both Potomac and Garrett State Forests. Off-road vehicles must be registered annually with the Department of Natural Resources and display a registration sticker. Permits are available online at the Department of Natural Resources
