Lists of Maryland Wildlife Species
Maryland is home to an
estimated 95 species of mammals, 89 species of reptiles and
amphibians; 410 species of birds and several hundred species of
marine and freshwater
fishes. An untold number of insect and other
invertebrate species (crustaceans, spiders, mollusks) also reside
here. Of all of these thousands of creatures, 320 are considered
rare. Ninety of these are designated as Threatened or Endangered and
are afforded protection under the State Nongame and Endangered
Species Conservation Act. |

Rare,
Threatened & Endangered Animals
The list of Maryland's known
wildlife species is dynamic. New species, usually invertebrates or
plants, are frequently discovered within our borders. Sometimes
these species are new to science and have never been found anywhere
else. More likely, the species is already known to live in nearby
states but was never discovered in Maryland before. Newly discovered
species are often so rare that they are immediate candidates for
consideration as a tracked element of endangered animals. |
