The Envirothon program is an exciting and fun way for high school students to learn about the environment. The Maryland program is sponsored by the Maryland Association of Soil Conservation Districts in conjunction with the Soil Conservation Districts across Maryland. DNR's Wildlife & Heritage Service staff assist with the Wildlife component of the Maryland Envirothon.

Beginning at the county level, teams of five students compete in 5 subject areas: wildlife, forestry, aquatics, soils, and a current events topic that changes each year. The winning team from each county then advances to the State competition where a public speaking component is incorporated into the scoring process. Each team is given a problem relating to the current events issue and they must then prepare a presentation about how to solve the problem. The winning team represents Maryland at the Canon National Envirothon competition. The nationals are held in a different state each year, thereby giving students the opportunity to meet students from across the country, as well as visit unique areas of our nation. Teams compete at the national level for scholarships, provided by Canon, totaling $25,000.

The Maryland team has competed successfully since the Envirothon began here in 1989. Teamwork is a key component emphasized throughout the entire process, from the county to the national level. Students enhance their critical thinking and problem solving skills, as well as enhance their ability to serve as role models and leaders in their community.
