Tawes Garden
The Helen Avalynne Tawes Garden:, named in honor of a former Maryland first lady, is a unique five-acre facility in the heart of Annapolis. In addition to pleasant ponds and many cultivated plantings, the barrier-free garden features a “Maryland-in-miniature” theme. Its volunteers assist in a number of ways. They serve as gardeners, tour guides, and gift shop salespersons. While no experience is necessary, volunteers should possess an interest in gardening, education, or retailing. Hours are flexible (daytime Monday through Friday). A pleasant work environment is guaranteed with training provided. If you are visiting the garden during the week, stop by the Department of Natural Resources gift shop which offers visitors a wide array of keepsakes with a natural resources flavor. All proceeds from the sale of items benefit the garden and educational activities for everyone to enjoy. The garden is located at the Tawes State Office Building (headquarters of the Maryland Department of Natural Resources) on Taylor Avenue in Annapolis. For more information, please contact the garden’s coordinator, Don Myers, at (410) 260-8189 or by email at dmyers@dnr.state.md.us
