Greetings friends of Maryland's freshwater streams!February 16th, 2008 kicked off the first training this year for the Stream Waders Volunteer stream monitoring program. The training was held in Upper Marlboro, Maryland at the Patuxent 4-H Center. The training was well attended, with 90 volunteers, splitting into 30 different teams. Of the trainees present many represented local watershed organizations such as the South River Federation, Port Tobacco Conservancy, West/Rhodes Riverkeepers, Magothy River Association and St. Mary’s River Association. There were also a few Maryland Conservation Crew teams present such as MCC Bay Crew, MCC South Maryland, MCC Merkle Wildlife Sanctuary, and MCC Patapsco State Park. There were seven trainers present: Dan Boward, Kascie Herron, Karl Hellman, Michael Kashiwagi, Katherine Laycock, Ann Schenk and Matt Ashton. By the end of the day, a total of 121 subwatersheds were selected for sampling across most of central and southern Maryland. The second Stream Waders training session was held on Saturday February 23rd, 2008 in Clearspring, Maryland at the Fairview Outdoor Education Center. The threat of inclement weather did not keep away most of the registered trainees, as there were 22 present for the day’s training. Members from the George’s Creek Watershed Association (Allegany County) were present at the training as well as the Maryland Conservation Crew from Swallow Falls State Park. By the end of the training session, nine different teams were formed and a total of 41 subwatersheds were selected for sampling, concentrated mostly in Western and Central Maryland. The trainers present at this training were Michael Kashiwagi, Kevin Boyle, Ann Roseberry-Lincoln and Ann Schenk. Saturday March 1st, 2008, concluded this year’s stream waders training sessions. The third and final training took place at West Nottingham Academy in Colora, MD. The session was attended at full capacity with 50 trainees, forming into 23 teams. A few different watershed alliance groups were present including: Chesapeake Bay Alliance, Chester River Association, Upper Eastern Shore Tributary Strategies Team, and the Maryland Conservation Corp. leader from Susquehanna State Park. By the end of the day a total of 96 sub-watersheds were selected for sampling. Trainers in attendance were Dan Bowar, Pat Ciccotto, Mike Depew, Kascie Herron, and Tony Prochaska. Samples were collected from the volunteers on the first Saturday in May. We have started entering the data and processing the samples. Data entry and location checks are usually completed by October, sample processing is usually complete by the end of the calendar year.
