How big is the park?

Gambrill State Park is over 1,100 acres.

Where are the trash cans?

All Maryland State Parks are “trash-free” parks, meaning there are no trash cans to ruin the view, or to attract flies, bees, and other wildlife. Visitors are asked to take their trash home with them when they leave.

Why are there service charges?

The money obtained through service charges is used to hire seasonal employees to assist visitors and maintain the park. It is also used to pay for supplies, utilities, and equipment needed to maintain restrooms, picnic areas, campgrounds, and other park facilities.

Where can I camp?

There are 34 campsites available in the Rock Run campground at Gambrill State Park. The campground contains 22 regular sites, 6 sites with 30 Amp electric hook-up, 4 camper cabins, 2 camp host sites, and a central bathhouse with modern shower and restroom facilities.

How do I make a reservation?

Campsites, camper cabins, picnic shelters, and the Tea Room can be reserved up to one year in advance by calling 1-888-432-CAMP (Monday-Friday, 8am-8pm). Reservations are also available online at

The Gambrill overlooks can also be reserved up to one year in advance by calling the Cunningham Falls office at 301-271-7574.

Why do I have to keep my equipment on the camping pad?

Setting up tents and other equipment in the woods will compact the soil, eventually killing trees and other vegetation.

Can I camp anywhere in the woods or along the trails?

Camping is allowed only at designated campsites in the Rock Run Campground. Backcountry camping is not allowed at Gambrill State Park, or within the Frederick City Watershed.

Are pets allowed in the park?

Pets are allowed in the campground and on the trails at Gambrill State Park, but they must be attended and leashed at all times. Leashes may not exceed 6 feet in length. Pets are not allowed in the Tea Room, Nature Center, camper cabins, restrooms, shelters, or picnic areas.

Is alcohol allowed in the park?

Alcohol is not allowed in Gambrill State Park, unless an alcohol permit has been issued.

Is hunting allowed in the park?

Hunting is not allowed within the boundaries of Gambrill State Park. Hunting is permitted in the Frederick City Watershed, just north of Gambrill State Park.

Is metal detecting allowed in the park?

Metal detecting is not allowed in any area of Gambrill State Park.

Is fishing allowed in the pond?

Fishing is allowed in the pond at Gambrill State Park. Anyone sixteen years of age or older needs a Maryland fishing license.

Where can I buy a Maryland fishing license?

Fishing licenses can be purchased online at, or by phone at 1-800-918-2870. They can also be purchased at any Wal-Mart or K-Mart, most hardware stores, and most sporting goods stores.

What is the Frederick City Watershed?

The Frederick City Watershed is a large tract of land (over 8000 acres), located between Gambrill and Cunningham Falls State Parks. The watershed is owned by the City of Frederick, but managed as a hunting area by the Maryland Department of Natural Resources. The main purpose of the land is to provide a forested drainage area for a clean water source for the City of Frederick.

Where can I mountain bike?

Mountain biking is allowed on the trails at Gambrill, with the exception of the White Oak Trail, which is open to hikers only.

Horseback riding is allowed on the trails at Gambrill, with the exception of the White Oak Trail, which is open to hikers only.

What time does the park close?

Gambrill State Park closes at sunset.

Can I leave my vehicle in the park overnight?

Overnight parking is not allowed at Gambrill State Park, except for registered campers in the Rock Run area.

Gambrill State Park is located approximately 51 miles northwest of Washington, D.C., and 53 miles west of Baltimore on Catoctin Mountain. From U.S. 70, exit onto U.S. Route 40 at Frederick. Travel approximately six miles. Turn right onto Gambrill Park Road and follow it approximately one mile to the park entrance.
