Volunteer With Patapsco Valley State Park

Volunteer Frank Durilla

October Featured Volunteer Ė Frank Durilla

Frank Durilla, a member of the Volunteer Mounted Patrol (VMP) at Patapsco Valley State Park (PVSP), grew up in the Hamilton area of Baltimore City. He attended Baltimore Polytechnic High School and then went on to study Electronic Engineering at the University of Maryland in College Park. After graduation, he joined the U.S. Air Force and was commissioned as an officer. After leaving the Air force, he converted to Civil Service and worked at NSA for a total of 33 years where he became a member of the Senior Executive Service.

Following retirement from the government, he continued his career in the intelligence community as a consultant with the SCITOR Corporation. With the exception of being stationed in England for three years, he has been a Maryland resident all his life. He officially retired in 2009.

Frank is a very active volunteer at Patapsco Valley State Park where he works in the park headquarters' office two mornings a week in addition to conducting VMP rides throughout the park on his Tennessee Walker, Chance. He enjoys all the riding trails in the park and in particular loves the McKeldin area for its vast terrain. He also delivers food for Meals on Wheels in the Frederick, Maryland area two days a week. He has been volunteering since his retirement in 2009. He is an avid golfer, likes to follow politics and collects O Gauge model trains. He and his wife Karen, who is also a VMP member, have three children and two grandchildren.

Message from Park Manager

Do you love the outdoors? Do you get excited about sharing your love of nature with others? Perhaps you have some spare time, and would like to share a little with our park and park visitors.

Volunteers are the heart and soul of Patapsco Valley State Park. They are involved in just about every aspect of park operations. Our volunteers do so many fantastic things within the park. On a given day you can find our volunteer Rangers running daily operations, and our volunteer naturalists leading hikes or doing nature crafts. Perhaps you will encounter a member of our volunteer mounted patrol while you are out on the trails, and on that very same hike you might meet our trail maintenance volunteers or even one of our Adopt-a-Trail families. Donít be surprised to see one of our volunteer photographers snapping pictures of people and nature within the park. If you stop in our visitor center or our nature center you will more than likely meet one of our volunteer docents Ė who will be thrilled to share interesting information about the park.

Do you think your talents are not suited for a park? We have graphic designers, marketing specialists, artists, carpenters, plumbers, stone masons, and seamstresses that all have volunteered to help create brochures, build decks and benches, promote our programs to media, and even sew curtains for our mini-cabins.

So if you have a little extra time to spare, I invite you to join the Patapsco Volunteer Family. We would love to have you as part of our team!
