The Present Day Ranger
The work of the volunteer forest warden has evolved to that of the present day Maryland ranger. Just as their predecessors through the past centuries, the men and women of today's ranger force are commissioned to protect and to serve the people of the state through wise management and conservation of natural resources. Today's rangers have the additional duty of teaching the public that we all share the responsibility of stewardship toward our natural resources. Over the years, the uniforms and tools have changed, the roles have been altered and certainly the natural resources have dwindled, but the rich tradition of public service and protection remains the common thread throughout the centuries. Together with their counterparts of military rangers from more than 350 years, the tradition continues into the 21st century.
