The Friends of Assateague (FOASP) was established in 2000. FOASP averages 200 members per year. One third of our members are Maryland residents – the rest are from out of state or Canada. Some of our members take advantage of the many opportunities to volunteer at Assateague State Park. Those opportunities (Camp Hosting, helping with Environmental Education, working on maintenance projects, etc.) are coordinated by the staff of the park.
The mission of the Friends of Assateague State Park is to enhance Assateague State Park through physical, financial, and outreach programs.
The only recurring fundraiser is annual dues. Our membership dues cover the cost of all communications, including four (4) newsletters and special mailings. What dues are left at the end of the year go toward donations to the park. We also receive donations for t-shirts, yard flags, beach bags, and other merchandise. We have received special donations for memorials, the Nature Center, and from a movie production (The Wedding Crashers).
The Friends of Assateague State Park produces four (4) newsletters a year to keep members informed and to provide a variety of volunteer opportunities as requested by ASP staff.
Assateague is the only state park in Maryland where you can camp beside the Atlantic Ocean. Wild horses and deer roam freely through the campground. While some days can be hot and buggy, there are cool nights, swimming, fishing, boating and surfing. The staff at Assateague State Park, including life guards, maintenance workers, park administration, and office personnel are all trained to meet the special needs of people camping by the beach.
FOASP and Assateague State Park work together to maintain a fleet of beach wheelchairs. During the months when the campground is open, these are available upon request to allow disabled visitors to go to the beach. Please visit or call the Assateague State Park Ranger Station (410-641-2918) for more information.

Three organizational meetings are held each summer: one per month in June, July and August. If you visit Assateague, look for information about us in the Ranger Station and Concession Stand, as well as on the bathhouse bulletin boards. Details of FOASP activities are available in the newsletter sent to members or by request.
