2009 DNR Photo Contest

Enter your photos into the 2009 Maryland Natural Resource Photo Contest, sponsored by the Maryland Department of Natural Resources, the Maryland Park Service and Maryland Public Television. Contest winners will receive prizes and have their photos published in The Maryland Natural Resource magazine as well as the 2010 Maryland Natural Resource Calendar.

Entry Rules

Calling all photographers (amateurs, professionals and students alike): Enter your photos of Maryland’s rich natural and recreational resources – water, wildlife, farms, fields, parks, forests and protected areas -- into the 2009 Maryland Natural Resource Photo Contest for a chance to win some terrific prizes! Sponsored by the Maryland Department of Natural Resources, contest winners will have their photos published in The Maryland Natural Resource magazine as well as the 2010 Maryland Natural Resource Calendar.

  1. The contest is open to all photographers except for employees of the Maryland Department of Natural Resources, Maryland Public Television, and their immediate families.
  2. The contest runs until September 11, 2009. Photo entries must be postmarked by September 11, 2009 to be considered. Entries postmarked after this time will be returned. Winners will be announced October 13, 2009 on the DNR website, www.dnr.maryland.gov and notified by mail that week.
  3. Photos will be judged in 6 categories:
    1. Birds: Maryland offers over 350 species to choose from.
    2. Wildlife: Fish Frog or Foxes, you decide!
    3. Insects: Bugs, bugs and more bugs.
    4. From the Mountains to the Bay: Our landscape category.
    5. Wild Plants: Wild-growing plants only, including their flowers, leaves, fruits and all other cool looking parts.
    6. Maryland State Parks: Highlighting Maryland’s natural world, from hunting and hiking to fly-fishing and free climbing to canoeing and shell-collecting, if it’s in a Maryland State Park, enter it here!
  4. All pictures must be original photographs and must have been taken within the past two years.
  5. Previously published photos, or parts thereof, are not eligible.
  6. Eligible formats include 5” x 7” to 8” x 10” color or black and white prints only. No slides, transparencies or digital submissions. Digital photos may be submitted in print form only.
  7. Photos should not be matted, mounted or framed.
  8. An entry fee of $10 for up to three photos with an additional $3 for each additional entry beyond three. There is no limit to the number of photos that may be submitted by any photographer.
  9. Each photo entered in the contest must be labeled on the reverse side of the photo print with name and address of photographer, category and photo number to correspond with the contest entry form. Photos that do not include a category will be assigned one by the DNR staff.
  10. All photos must be described on the single contest entry form, which accompanies the entries.
  11. Judges will make selections based on the quality, composition, content, originality, uniqueness, creativity, mass appeal, and reproductive quality. Judges’ decisions are final and in their sole and absolute discretion.
  12. This offer is void where prohibited by law.
  13. DNR is not responsible for lost or misdirected entries.
  14. DNR reserves the right to publish all entries.
