Gambrill State Park Quest - Barking Up The Right Tree

Introduction to the Quest

Gambrill.Quest.jpgTeams will hike along Gambrill State Park’s Red Maple Trail. During this journey they will learn about the tree species present. Using interpretive panels the teams will answer questions about the trees. They will the use letters from the answers to discover a message about the Gambrill forest. Teams may choose the basic quest or continue on the trail to find the BONUS Answer. The quest will begin at the Trailhead bulletin board. Due to staffing the quest will have minimal staff interaction. Teams are encouraged to print off worksheets prior to arrival.

Quest Information

Begin at the Gambrill State Park Trailhead parking lot. The hike is one mile in length. make sure to have water, sunscreen, bug repellent and appropriate clothing for the weather. To complete the Bonus portion of the quest, participants must cross Gambrill Park Road.

Park Information

Gambrill State Park is a beautiful mountain park, located on the ridge of the Catoctin Mountains in Frederick County. Its most popular feature is the 16 miles of trails for hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding. The park is separated into two areas: the Rock Run area and the High Knob area. From the 1,600-foot High Knob, three stone overlooks offer breathtaking views of the Frederick and Middletown Valleys then continue to the northern reaches of the Shenandoah Mountains. The High Knob area also offers wooded picnic areas, three picnic shelters, and a large stone lodge called the Tea Room. The picnic shelters and the Tea Room are available for reservation. The Rock Run area offers a cozy family-style campground, a picnic area, and a small pond for fishing.

Directions to Gambrill State Park

  • From Baltimore (Westbound): Take Route 70 West towards Frederick. Take Exit 49 for US-40 Alt toward Braddock Heights/Middletown. Turn right onto US-40 Alt East/Old National Pike. Turn left onto Old Camp Road. Turn left onto US-40 West. Turn right onto Gambrill Park Road. At the top of the mountain make a left into the High Knob Area.
  • From Hagerstown (Eastbound): Take US-40 East towards Frederick. Turn left onto Gambrill Park Road. At the top of the mountain make a left into the High Knob Area.
  • Make a reservation to stay at the park.
