What are we measuring?

The Maryland GPI considers the value of benefits that the Maryland public receives from transportation infrastructure, water infrastructure, and household goods. Transportation infrastructure (roads and highways) are vital in allowing us to travel to meet our daily needs. Water infrastructure is particularly important in Maryland as the Chesapeake Bay forms an important part of many of its citizen’s lives. Most household goods benefit us long after purchase, be it a lawn mower, washing machine, or oven, these goods are essential for meeting basic needs.

Trends 2012-2019

Services from built capital increased approximately 1% from 2012 to 2019. The value of household goods services declined slightly over this period while transportation and water infrastructure increased.

  • Services from Water Infrastructure

Services from water infrastructure increased by 1.26% from 2014 to 2015. While not the only factor, the doubling of the Chesapeake Bay Restoration Fee in 2012 has contributed to the increase in value of the current water and sewage systems.

Calculation

The methods here follow those of GPI 1.0 for transportation infrastructure and household goods, but expand built infrastructure to include the value of water infrastructure, using the same assumptions for depreciation rate and average interest rates.
