DNR Regroups to Improve
Land Acquisition and Planning Efforts
In the summer of 2007 the Department of Natural Resources undertook a strategic restructuring to improve targeting and coordinating of DNR’s land acquisition efforts. With limited personnel and the need to stretch Maryland’s land conservation dollars, a consolidation of these activities intends to yield efficiencies and be more effective.
By organizing planning and acquisition staff regionally, with an Updated Green Infrastructure and land targeting process already under development, and with support from the new Office of Sustainability, DNR has initiated a new approach to land conservation.
These changes involve realignment of existing resources as opposed to requiring new resources. The new Land Acquisition and Planning unit brings together the experience and talents of professional staff previously assigned to Public Lands Policy and Planning, Program Open Space, the Rural Legacy Program, Community Parks and Playgrounds and the Capital Grants and Loans Administration
