Maryland's State Forests are managed to provide a wide range of public benefits, including sustainable timber production, outdoor recreation, wildlife habitat, clean water protection, climate resilience, and the conservation of Maryland's forest resources. As part of the Maryland Forest Service's commitment to the long-term stewardship of these public lands, Annual Work Plans translate each forest's management goals into specific projects and activities scheduled for implementation during the coming fiscal year.
The plans identify priorities related to forest composition, establishment, growth, health, and quality, as well as recreation improvements, infrastructure projects, maintenance activities, research, and other resource management initiatives. Together, these projects help ensure Maryland's forests continue to provide the ecological, economic, and social benefits described on the Maryland Forests page.
Annual Work Plans are developed within a broader framework of sustainable forest stewardship. Maryland's State Forests are
independently certified to nationally recognized forest management standards, helping ensure that management activities are environmentally sound, economically viable, and socially responsible. The plans serve as an important tool for implementing the objectives outlined through Maryland's forest certification program while maintaining transparency and accountability in the management of public lands.
Public Review and Comment
Public participation is an important part of the planning process. Before implementation, each Annual Work Plan undergoes review by natural resource professionals representing a range of disciplines, including forestry, wildlife, fisheries, recreation, water quality, and ecological conservation. Plans are also reviewed by local citizen advisory committees before being released for public comment.
