MAY 8, 2001 MEETING SUMMARY |
|
MOTIONS |
ACTIONS BY THE DEPARTMENT |
| The boat limit for hand and patent tongers should equal the sum of the daily individual catch limits of the licenses on board. | No action taken. |
| The Department should evaluate a license issued to the boat for a crew member, since crew members change over time. | No action taken. |
| Stop times for oystering should stay at sunset for January, February and March and not revert to 3 P.M. Motion passed. Following the motion discussion Larry Simns cautioned that the Department of Health wouldn't let oysters be held overnight on a regular basis and that would affect the workability of a sunset time limit. | No action taken. |
| Extend the oyster season for two weeks in April according to the authority of the Department. The Department cautioned that this action would not allow an early start to this oyster season since only two weeks can be added to an entire oyster season. | No action taken. |
| The Chesapeake Bay fishery discussion centered upon gear and time liberalizations to permit more certainty for commercial harvesters to catch their quota. A motion was submitted to allow the following; 1) Anchor gill net in certain designated areas, 2) fishing more nighttime hours, and 3) 10 boxes of gill net to a boat for the December through February drift gill net season. Note: Each of the three elements in the motion can be considered separately. | Under consideration. |
| The Atlantic coastal fishery discussion included derivation of seasonal, monthly and daily quotas, declaration process, and economics. | After two meetings and discussion with the Atlantic fisherman, the fishery was revised to a monthly quota system for this season. |
| Permit a single Atlantic coast declaration, and not separate declarations for trawl or gill net. | In effect for the 2001-2002 season. |
