Mark Bennett | 236.5 lbs. | 09/22/2002 | While on an overnight trip Sunday, September 22, 2002 at the Washington Canyon 500 Fathom Tip, Mark Bennett of Salem, NJ hooked a 236.5 pound yellowfin tuna (pictured left) while chunking butterfish at 3:00 a.m. aboard private boat Doghouse, captained by Edgar Lewis. After a 40 - 45 minute battle on stand up tackle with 80 pound test line the tuna was boated. The fish was weighed on certified scales at Sunset Marina, an official Maryland Sport Fishing Tournament Citation Center, and verified by Dale Timmons and Rose Stivers. This new State record yellowfin tuna measured 68.75 inches in length with a girth of 48.5 inches and exceeds the previous record of 187 pounds caught July 25, 1998 by 49.5 pounds. |
