The Secretary of Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR) pursuant to Natural Resources Article 4-1103 of Maryland’s Annotated Code proposes that the following area of the Nanticoke River, Wicomico County, will be permanently closed to shellfish harvest for the purpose of establishing an Oyster Sanctuary effective Friday, July 9, 2004.  This area includes former shellfish lease WI 662 and is approximately 9.5 acres in size.

The oyster sanctuary consists of all the area defined by: a point at or near Latitude 38º15’07.2” N, Longitude 75º54’47.3” W then running approximately 358º (true) to a point at or near Latitude 38º15’20.2” N, Longitude 75º54’47.9” W, then running approximately 88º (true) to a point at or near Latitude 38º15’07.4” N, Longitude 75º54’43.0” W, then running approximately 177º (true) to a point at or near Latitude 38º15’20.3” N, Longitude 75º54’43.9” W, then running approximately 267º (true) to the point of beginning.

The Department’s goal is to restore oyster population in these areas and to designate these grounds closed to harvest in order to contribute to the ecology of the river.  Seed oysters will be planted on the site to rebuild populations, if needed.
