HERRING BAY SHELLFISH CLOSURE

 

 

The Secretary of Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR) pursuant to Natural Resources Article 4-1103 of Maryland’s Annotated Code proposes that the following area of the Herring Bay, Anne Arundel County, will be permanently closed to shellfish harvest for the purpose of establishing an Oyster Sanctuary effective Friday, July 9, 2004.  This area is in the vicinity of Natural Oyster Bar 8-8 and is approximately 5 acres in size. 

 

The oyster sanctuary consists of all the area defined by: a point at or near Latitude 38º45.301’ N, Longitude 76º32.928’ W then running approximately 320º (true) to a point at or near Latitude 38º45.360’ N, Longitude 76º32.991’ W, then running approximately 50º (true) to a point at or near Latitude 38º45.409’ N, Longitude 76º32.916’ W, then running approximately 140º (true) to a point at or near Latitude 38º45.350’ N, Longitude 76º32.853’ W, then running approximately 230º (true) to the point of beginning. 

 

The Department’s goal is to restore oyster population in these areas and to designate these grounds closed to harvest in order to contribute to the ecology of the bay.  Seed oysters will be planted on the site to rebuild populations, if needed.
