Herrington Manor State Park Rodeo

Type: Freshwater
Region: Western
Location: Herrington Manor State Park

Herrington Manor State Park hosted their annual Kids Fishing Day on Saturday, June 4, at Herrington Lake. Park staff along with Western Garrett County State Parks volunteers were on hand to assist with registration, weighing and measuring fish, and assisting the 60 plus kids with fish handling and hook removal. Each participant was given a bag of plastic worms, night crawlers, and lunch.

The weather was fantastic and the fishing was even better, the young anglers were catching many of the recently stocked rainbow and golden trout, plus some of the largest sunfish I've seen. One young angler, Brett , was heading to Bill's Outdoor World to register his citation size chain pickerel. Prizes were awarded for the heaviest fish in three separate age categories (under 6, 7-11, and 12-16)

I was there to represent DNR-Fisheries in support of the Youth Component of the Maryland Fishing Challenge featuring Diamond Jim. Ty Miller, age 11, was the lucky angler selected to move on to the finale' which will be held in conjunction with the Maryland Seafood Festival on September 10, 2011 at Sandy Point Park. Ty will be in a special drawing for youth for one of the many fishing trips donated by our partners
