First Fish of 2014
Location: Friend's Creek
I had a successful first outing for 2014 even though I only caught one fish. I started the day at Big Hunting Creek to take some photos of the water. I did not enter the water or fish there as there were many people fishing already. Many anglers were taking advantage of the 60 F sunny weather. I decided to drive up to Friend's Creek to see if any hold over fish were left. My first stop was one of the lower big holes and I had a strike from a fish but did not hook it. I continued to fish and finally hooked a nice fish on a black Wooly Bugger. The fish was stubborn and it took me a little longer to land it than the standard hatchery rainbow. It was a pretty 15" Brown Trout-maybe left over from the fall stocking. I took some photos and released it.
I continued to fish moving upstream to another big hole but caught nothing there. I tried another two holes further upstream but the muddy water made fishing difficult. I returned to the first place were I caught my Brown Trout but the stream had risen and the water was the color of coffee with cream and sugar. I talked to an angler who was driving by and he said there may be another two Brown Trout in the swimming hole downstream. I did not fish the hole due to the slippery snow. The snow dictated where I fished as it made access more difficult. Gave up and drove home. I am looking forward to the spring stocking and will return. Hope that 2014 will be a good fishing season. Tight lines all.
