Pre-Season Trout Stocking

Type: Freshwater
Region:
Location:

As most fishermen know, it has been very cold this past month and we’ve all been living with snow and freezing temperatures. Maryland’s rivers, lakes and ponds have been covered with ice throughout the state and especially in the western portions. Traditionally, trout fishermen get to rub off some of the cabin fever that is normally associated with the month of February with the pre-season trout stocking that usually commences during the first week of February. The trout stocking program have facilities at the Manning and Unicorn Lake Hatcheries where they hold trout in special rearing ponds for trout stocking in the eastern, southern and central regions of the state. These ponds have been covered with ice making it impossible for crews to gather up the trout for stocking. The Albert Powell and Bear Creek Hatcheries have also been encumbered with ice and heavy snow and ice at stocking sites also negate stocking crews from accessing streamside with the hatchery trucks. The weatherman promises that warmer weather is due in the near future and stocking crews are eager to begin placing trout in your favorite pre-season stocking areas. To see stocking locations and updates check the trout stocking website.
