Tuna Fishing at the Hot Dog
Location: Offshore - The Hot Dog
Went tuna fishing for the first time this past Friday July 12th with my dad, brother, uncle and a few friends of my dad. We went out to the Hot Dog and got on the fish almost immediately. Within the first 10-15 minutes we had a fish on. Turned out to be a 6 ft Dusky Shark that we managed to bring boatside before it sheared the line (no pictures unfortunately). Then after resetting all the lines we hooked into a tuna. We fought it for about 40 minutes before landing the fish pictured below - a 138 lb bluefin. Then we got the lines reset, and had another fish on within another 15 minutes. This one managed to get free after about 10 minutes of a fight though. Then we hooked a beast of a fish. All 7 of the guys on the boat took at least one turn fighting this behemoth. We passed the rod 21 times between the 7 of us on board, and fought the fish for 4 hours and 5 minutes before it snapped the braided line. We never even got it close enough to get a good look at the size of it. The captain who has experience fighting and landing a 450 lb bluefin several years ago estimated it was likely in the 300 lb range, but we'll never know. It's just another fishing story now.
After that trip I stuck around at the beach and did some surf fishing. Caught this interesting double header. A kingfish and a crab - not as exciting but a little unique. Good weekend of fishing.
