Hickory Shad at Fletcher's Boat House
Location: Fletcher's Boat House
Hickory Shad have arrived at Fletcher's Boat House in Washington D.C. and action is good. I started out the day talking to a kayak angler going for Striped Bass. He reported a 28" Striper caught on a swimbait lure the day before. I bought my fishing license and proceeded to go to an area above the boat house on the river. The best lure to fish was a hot pink shad dart. Action was steady into the evening including a couple of nice shad approaching 2 lbs. The area got crowded as people showed up to fish after work. I saw a bald eagle patrolling the river for fish. It was a pretty sight though I did not have the right gear to take a photo of it. A professional system DSLR with a long lens is the best bet for taking photos of these beautiful birds. Fletcher's Boat House is a great place to do bird photography with the right equipment if you have it. The shad fishing is not great but pretty good. I caught about 10-12 shad in all for about 3 hours of fishing. Action should get better in coming weeks. I might try casting a swimbait for a Striper. Photo is of one of the nice shad I caught. Tight lines all.
