Finally Caught a Red Drum

Type: Chesapeake
Region: Eastern
Location: Romancoke Pier

After hearing all season about the catches of red drum, I was determined to catch one of my own. I had also been wanting to check out Romancoke Pier on Kent Island, and I will now add it to the long list of my favorite fishing spots. On the final day before Hurricane Sandy struck, I decided to head down there for one last day on the Bay before switching over to trout fishing for the rest of the year. After catching a few small rockfish (and losing a couple of larger ones), including a double hookup on a topwater Spook (pictured), I was chucking a small swim shad on my ultralight rig (2-lb. test), when suddenly the reel began to sing the sweetest song I had heard all season! Figuring that I had hooked into a larger rockfish, I let him run a few times, then lugged him on in. It was the drum I had been seeking all summer: 16 inches of brute-force beauty. After a couple of quick pics, I turned him loose, and asked as I always do that he go and tell his daddy that Im here. For their size, they put up a great fight, and I cant wait to catch another. And for the record, his daddy never showed up

Depending on what Sandy has done to the migratory fish, I may have to postpone the changeover to freshwater fishing for a bit
