Yellow Perch at Black Hill

Type: Freshwater
Region: Central
Location: Black Hill Regional Park

Yesterday evening I fished at Black Hill in Boyds. I was hoping to catch some crappie, but was surprised when I caught about ten yellow perch about 5-7. I had no idea there were yellow perch in there. Did DNR stock them, or are they natural from the existing tributaries? Have you had any other reports of yellow perch at Black Hills?

DNR Response: Thanks for the report. Yellow Perch are a recent introduction at Little Seneca Lake, MD DNR did not stock them into the lake. We first became aware of their presence in 2010. Anglers reported catching them and we found them in our electrofishing survey of the lake in the fall. Based upon the sizes of yellow perch captured, we estimated that they had been introduced by unknown sources in 2006/2007.

We would not have recommended stocking yellow perch into the lake because they will compete with the largemouth bass for food and their tendency to overpopulate.
