Beginning during the 2013/2014 tournament, Angler's Log entries which include Blue Catfish, Northern Snakehead or Flathead Catfish, at any length in size, will be eligible for up to two prizes via a random drawing at the annual Maryland Fishing Challenge Finale. Fish must be kept and a photo showing the kept fish is mandatory. Multiple entries are allowed, but each fish can only be entered once. Remember, all invasive species must be dead to be entered and there is no catch and release category. Visit the Maryland fishing Challenge web site to read the complete set of rules.

Lake Habeeb at Population Survey

Type: Freshwater
Region: Western
Location: Rocky Gap State Park

The Western Region Inland Fisheries crew recently conducted a fish population survey in the 243 acre Lake Habeeb at Rocky Gap State Park. The Inland Fisheries Service's efforts to establish a population of Redear Sunfish has been successful, as these large panfish were abundant throughout the lake. Many of the Redears were in the 9 - 10.5 inch size class, and were thick bodied. Redear Sunfish fingerlings were stocked in the lake from 1998 until 2002. The lake also supports a good population of nice-sized Bluegills and Pumpkinseeds. Yellow Perch were common, and perch measuring 12.5 inches were collected. Largemouth Bass were abundant, however the population was dominated by bass in the 9 - 11 inch range, and they tended to be thin. However, we did collect a few trophy Largemouth Bass greater than 20 inches. We will be exploring some fishery management options to improve the Largemouth Bass population. Other fish species of note was a good sized Channel Catfish, and Rainbow Trout were rising to mayflies everywhere on the lake.

Friend's Creek Brown Trout

Type: Freshwater
Region: Central
Location: Owen's Creek and Friend's Creek

Had another great day at Friend's Creek in Maryland fishing for trout. I started out the day at Owen's Creek only to find it high and muddy. Thought it would be clear by now. Had a few strikes from fish but gave up after awhile and headed up to Friend's Creek. The fishing there was better since the creek was not as high with clearer water. I hooked up with two rainbows and then fishing was slow. Had my lunch and went downstream. Hooked up with a nice Rainbow Trout and then headed down to the swimming hole on the hopes that it was stocked with some nice Brown Trout. Caught two more Brown Trout making my limit. After that I fished for fun hooking some nice 13" trout then a nice 17" Brown Trout. All of these fish fought hard and were hooked on a streamer pattern then released. The swimming hole lived up to its reputation. After talking to several other anglers I found out that a nice Rainbow Trout was caught there the week before. Looking forward to rest of the season and great fishing. Tight lines.

Gold Trout are Fun to Catch

Type: Freshwater
Region: Central
Location: Friend's Creek

I just returned from a trip to Friend's Creek in northern Maryland. I had a rewarding day filling out my limit catching 3 different varieties of trout. Fishing was slow but toward the end of the day things picked up. I found out that my waders were shot leaking the whole day and the slippery going on the rocks did not help. I hooked several trout which just snapped my line as soon as I set the hook several times that day. There are some nice fish in there. The most memorable catch was a nice 15" plus Golden Rainbow Trout that I tried to grab with my hands after a tough battle. The fish struggled and flopped back into the stream-maybe someone else will catch it. I caught one brown and three rainbows. I ended the day hooking a nice Golden Rainbow Trout on a muddler minnow. This trout I managed to land even though it fell out of my hands but I managed to grab it in time. Filling out my limit I went back to my car and talked to an angler who filled out his limit in 15 minutes using power bait. Some anglers are taking the whole day, others just 15 minutes to catch their limit. I just wonder if the golden trout fight harder than other varieties. Please keep stocking them, they are a blast to catch. There is a second stocking and maybe next week after the rains will be good. Tight lines.

Nice Rainbow From Casselman

Type: Freshwater
Region: Western
Location: Casselman River

I decided to fish the Casselman River before the rain hit hard today (5/15/14) and had a pretty good day of nymph fishing. There were a good bit of caddis hatching and a few fish rising here and there but I stuck with my nymphs because they keep producing. Caught a total of 20 fish with 15 of them being rainbows and the biggest pictured below. Lost another one that was slightly bigger than the pictured as I was bringing it to the net. These rainbows were some of the hardest fighting trout I have caught in a while!
