Calvert Cliffs Rainbow Trout

Type: Freshwater
Region: Southern
Location: Calvert Cliffs Pond

Having some time this morning I decided to head to Calvert Cliffs State Park for a little while. I thought I might try a jerk bait for a little bit to see if I could get a bass to bite. I had no luck with that presentation so I decided to switch to a Matzuo crankbait. I was able to cast to a couple of spots, just outside of a few tree limbs. A crank or two to get it down and I'd wait, a couple more and I was hooked up. At first I thought it was a largemouth, but to my surprise I found this guy at the end of my line. I guess this one has eluded all the fishermen who come down right after stocking. I snapped a photo or two and then released it back into the water.

Cold Day To Be Trout Fishing

Type: Freshwater
Region: Central
Location: Deer Creek/Rocks State Park

I caught this rainbow trout the day after Thanksgiving. It was tough fishing, temps in the low 30s. I caught this trout using a 4 wt fly rod with a #14 olive green wooly bugger on 3x tippet. Ice was forming in the guides between casts. This was a nice holdover from the Fall stocking. License fees well spent! Thanks for maintaining a first class trout stocking program.

Big Sunfish in the Cold

Type: Freshwater
Region: Central
Location: Local Pond

The recent onslaught of cold weather has almost put the skids on the Mason Dixon panfish bite. However, we did manage some good fish this past week to include some impressive pumpkinseed sunfish and pumpkingill hybrids along with a lot of hen bluegills in the 9 inch category. Best seed was 10.25 inches...a personal best for me. All released.

We floated 1/200th oz Trout Magnet heads tipped with bait about 6 feet below a sensitive 1.5 in Comal weighted float to catch these fish. A few took Gulp! 1 inch minnows. Hoping for warmer weather!

North Branch Election Day

Type: Freshwater
Region: Western
Location: Northe Branch

I headed out to the North Branch after voting, and I fished a couple different sections of the catch and release water and the put and take water around Barnum with a good friend. A couple caddis flying around and some small blue winged olives in the afternoon, but most our fish came on indicator rigs. The catching was a little on the slow side, but the weather conditions were really nice, and the water was low and managable to wade (well as managable as the North Branch gets). Here was the fish of the day, a 20 inch male rainbow that ate a golden stonefly nymph. Great fight and a good looking healthy fish!!! He was released to give someone else a tug soon.

Trout for Dinner

Type: Freshwater
Region: Southern
Location: Calvert County Pond

Nicholas of Owings and his Grand Pop of Annapolis caught 4 rainbows and 1 golden rainbow trout in a Calvert County Pond, using trout dough balled on a hook. The other 4 fish pictured were given to the fishing duo by another angler at the pond. The trout ranged in size from 11 to 14 inches. All of the fish were cleaned, grilled, and consumed that evening.

DNR note: Sounds like you had a great fish fry! Nicholas and his Grand Pop were legal in accepting the fish from another angler but DNR would like to remind anglers that once they catch their creel limit they should not continue fishing, even if they give what they catch away, you will get a ticket.

Visited family this past week and found time to make trips to the North Branch Catch & Release area on Thursday and Friday. Both days were overcast and cool but did not negatively impact the fishing. Caught numerous trout on in-line spinners including these two nice rainbows!

Trout Fishing Report from Southern Maryland

Type: Freshwater
Region: Southern
Location: Hughesville Pond

On Sunday, I went fishing with my dad at Hughesville Pond. I had a great time and I caught 3 rainbow trout. Here are some of the pictures that my dad took of me. With 2 of the trout, I brought up some weeds that looked like mistletoe. So for one of the pictures, I joking called it the mistletoe trout. I also want to thank DNR for stocking the ponds with trout because they are really fun to catch.
