Baltimore County Blitz

Type: Freshwater
Region: Central
Location: Loch Raven, Gunpowder

Last week, I fished a few spots in Baltimore County. The first stop was Loch Raven, where I caught and released several largemouth bass. I also caught a brown trout in one of the feeder creeks that runs into the reservoir. After landing the fish, you could see it still had a half eaten minnow in its mouth. After trying Loch Raven, I visited two areas of the Gunpowder, in Sparks, MD. I was able to get another brown trout, as well as a golden (rainbow) trout. Plenty of eager trout still left after the spring stockings. Tight lines!

Memorial Day Outing

Type: Freshwater
Region: Central
Location: Northwest Branch

Made it out on the Northwest Branch on Memorial Day afternoon with my wife. She managed to catch one of the remaining trout that had been stocked earlier in the spring on a white Rooster tail spinner, which we enjoyed with dinner that night. None of the sunfish I caught could compete with hers size-wise, but I had her beat on numbers!

Snakehead Found in Little Patuxent River

Type: Freshwater
Region: Central
Location: Found in Little Patuxent River

I was fishing at the Little Patuxent River in Savage, MD when my buddy noticed a fish, resembling a snakhead come to the top for air. In disbelief, I climbed a tall boulder and put on my fishing glasses. Sure enough what looked to be about a 30 inch snakehead was laying on a sandy bottom in about two feet of water. The hunt was on to try to capture this savage fish. After throwing a gulp minnow near the sighting, I was able to catch a much smaller 15 inch snakehead. Not the fight I was hoping to get on my first snakehead, but none the less, one more dead snakehead. I have fished this pool and the surrounding ones all spring and this is the first I have seen or even heard of in this river. Probably the reason why I didn't catch any trout there today…

Lower Savage River Browns

Type: Freshwater
Region: Western
Location: lower Savage River

I had a pretty good day on the lower Savage River fishing both nymphs and Dries. Had a crazy midge hatch from about 2:30 - 5:30 pm. During that hatch they were taking size 20 Griffiths gnats pretty well. I was fishing with a friend from Denmark and he had a good day on the water as well landing fishing in the 10-14 inch range.
